Potential Buy 629-1 6"
My local Pawn Shop/Gun Pusher called me today with "such a deal have I got for you": a 629-1 6" in OK condition. It needs to be either worked over with the Flitz rag or bead blasted back to original. Anyway, they want $500.00 cash OTD. Seems to me about any N-frame in shooting condition is worth $500, so I am buying it sight unseen based on several years of trust. Now, buyers remorse sets in - am I getting set up for a reaming or is this the good deal it seems?

You said any N-frame that shoots is worth at least $500 especially one made of stainless and shoots the four four. One of the best parts of buying a used revolver to me is the satisfaction I get from cleaning, lubing, polishing, adjusting just doing what ever I can to make it great shooting beauty again! You will feel that on this I am sure once you get her all "tuned up".Don't forget like I always to get some before pictures so you can admire the difference.

JD, If you have trust in the pawn shop sounds like a no brainer. A 629-1 that needs some TLC for $500.00 no problem.
However, if the strap is nearly cut through, or a list of other show stopper problems are present you may have a paper weight on your hands.
Please let us know how it looks!

I bought a 6" 629-1 a few years back in very good condition. I paid more than $500-.
I am happy with my purchase, I wish you the same....

Update on original post:
I picked the 629-2 up today, My first impression was that it is going to need a lot of cleaning and either polishing or I will need to work it over with Scotchbrite to restore the original finish, My feelings were not improved by the ugly goodyears it wears. OK, it is a $500.00 gun. The deeper checks indicate it really isn't so bad... no perceptible cylinder end shake, B/C gap measures 0.004", timing and lockup are good, and the cylinder stop notches show no signs of peening. So, I am quite satisfied, and will either put a couple of evenings wit a tee-shirt and Flitz, or maybe bead blast it back to original. It will be a month before I can give it any range time because I had surgery on my right hand and the doctor has said no shooting until September.
Bottom line - I'm quite satisfied with my $500.00 .44 magnum.

For $500 you did well. Any 629-2 in working order is well worth that price. As long as no one shot a bunch of deer grenade shells through it there should be no problem. I bought mine with about 10 rounds fired through it so sometimes you do find a good example. I bought mine from my brother so I know what the history was. He gave me a brother price on it because he needed cash to fix his lawnmower. He tried to buy it back later but I had bought a really nice holster for it and he didn't want to buy that so I had to say no to him. I wish he had said he just needed a loan instead. I felt bad about not selling it back to him but I'm glad I still have it too. My brother is gone now so it's something I'll always remember that I got from him.
