Default Re approximate manufacture date

G'day from Downunder

G'day All , I have just bought a model 17-6 .22 rimfire revolver with a 4" barrel serial number AWY4721 and would like to know what year it was made if anyone can help ? it has a colour cased target hammer and trigger and locks up as tight as a fishes butt
I got it from a old club member and could not be happier I took off the target grips and put on a set of S&W combat finger groove grips that were lurking in the spare parts drawer and now it feels as good as it looks.

Default some inconsistencies noted...maybe not a 17-6

Hello from Virginia, USA.

Some things you posted don't seem in line with a 17-6. The serial number prefix AWY was used in 1987, which would be a Model 17-4 which (in 1986) introduced a 4" heavy barrel w/serrated ramp on ramp base in place of the Model 18. The Model 17-6 didn't come about until 1990 which introduced the full lug barrel with new yoke retention system. SCSW 4th does say "some early 17-6's reported without full lug". These guns command a slight premium.

Also not to be discounted is the Model 17-5 which was introduced in 1988 New yoke retention system/radius stud package.

Please post a picture of the Model stamping on yoke with cylinder open, and a pic of the serial number prefix (numbers blocked out is OK) and any other markings found on the gun and we can maybe help pin it down.

Mine is a Model 17-3 and serial numbers to 1971. Note the lack of full lug which didn't change until 1989/1990.
