Default 686 vs 686 Prelock?

I found 2 686s.
Prelock 750.00
200 rounds ammo plus original case
686 current version 700.00
Has wood grips bianchi lined holster original box.
Which one? Would you get?

Both are 6 inch. I have a 586 but no holsters. The 586 is a lock type current version.

Same here, nothing against the guns with the lock but the older examples without the lock just look better to me.

For what it is worth, I would rather have a pre-lock revolver over an internal lock revolver. While the internal lock revolvers may be proven reliable, I don't want to take the risk of the internal lock engaging in a life or death situation!

Good point. However I would doubt I am gonna use my 686 or 586 in any emergency. Maybe usps? Sorry but my g22 is on my bedside. Not as accurate but more than 6 rounds.

My duty gun is a 4 inch 686-6 with lock. Policy prevents me from removing the lock.

I think $700 and $750 are over priced for a used 686. I would offer something lower. If you decide to get the newer one there are members who sell a plug for the lock here on the forum.

Default Yeah, both are high...

The 6" barrel is the least expensive of the 586/686 to buy compared to the shorter barrels which do command a premium.

Buy the Pre-lock, they wont be around much longer (people like me buy them up), the newer ones will be here for a long while.

Pre-lock..... and... firing pin is on the hammer w/ the old style frame.

For me it's mostly a question of style over function!

The pre-lock revolvers are becoming like the P&R guns in the eyes of S&W enthusiasts and will become more so in years to come. Long term value and appreciation, you are better off with the pre-lock 686. For utility and regular use, the lock gun will serve you very well. If the lock bothers you, remove it and buy a plug.

You are in the wheel house on price for both of them out west. In AZ we rarely see 686s come across for less than 700.

I have both prelock and current production. I carry current production 329PD with my Lock Delete and custom steel cylinder bolt installed. My pre spends most of its time in the safe I don't want to scratch it up carrying it.

But my pre is the one I'll get out oil and just fiddle with for an hour or so now and then because I enjoy it.

Buy the one that makes you happy

Behind enemy lines of this draconian state. We have a pistol roster. I cannot buy any pistol not on our roster out of state. This means any pistol that is not on roster, demands a premium.
A ruger mark iv will fetch 1000.00 plus. M and p runs 700 to 900 average used.

There's a very desirable 3 inch 7 shot(if you like many crave the shorter barrel and the extra round) lock gun in the classifieds for $675.
The longer barrel, 6 inch guns, are typically less expensive, imo.

Yes I would love to get that 686. But it does not have "A" prefix on the sku. It is off roster for us peons behind the iron curtain. I could only purchase that 686 if it was a ppt in Cali. But then again if it was local price would be closer to 1000.00. Lol.

I'm not a raging hater of the new guns but it's a simple fact they aren't making any more of the old ones. Pre-lock is far more likely to hold value.

I have a model 686 that my dad purchased new sometime around 1986 I think. It has less than 50 rounds through it. It is as new. I removed the wood grip while it's still mint. I installed the Hogue combat type grip.

Default 686 pre-lock

Some pretty nice pre-locks here. This is my 686-4. I'd recommend a "pre-lock", if for nothing more than pride of owning the "older" guns and re-sale value. IMO there is certainly nothing wrong with the later 686 with the IL; it's just sort of a nostalgia thing more than a functional issue.

I would also go with the pre-lock gun. Not that the newer gun is bad or anything, but the pre-lock guns aren't being made any more and will only appreciate in value as long as you take care of it.

And if you do get it, replace the goodyear grips with some nice wood offerings from Ahrends or Culina or some other quality wood grip maker. They just look so much better and 357 Mag isn't a real punishing round with a 6" barrel.

+1 on^^. You said you have a G22 for defense. So I'm assuming you want a 686 for range use or maybe as a sportsman's carry. (And I carry my 6" 686-1 as a sportsman's gun a lot. Nothing wrong with a 6" for that). I'd get the pre lock simply because it's a bit more classic and you really don't need the lock function. Put on a set of nice wood grips for show- but keep the Pachs. They are good in the field.

Yes I have quite a few glocks. Reason of hd is simple. 15 rounds of Speer gold dot 165 grain. Running tfx pro sights.
Reason for the wheel guns? I grew up with 17 and 19s. I lost most in a home robbery 20 years ago. So I have been wanting a few wheel guns to somewhat replace what I had lost. I love the looks of the 586 and 686. Such beautiful guns.
Looks like the Prelock is a go. Hope to meet the seller Saturday.

Lock or no-lock? I can tell you one thing for sure. Cruising this forum can result in a much smaller bank account balance. Nice looking guns here.

For the cost of one smith. You could almost get a 12 pack of hipoints686 vs 686 Prelock?

So, if my math's right, for the same money if you got the Hi Points you'd be prepared for 180 zombies without a mag change?Just have to watch out for the 181st!!

I'll take the 686 and a bunch of speedloaders!

It would be a tougher decision for me if the newer one was a 7 shot. I like that extra round. But apparently it’s not a plus model, so I too would probably choose the pre model.

I have two S&W 686s, neither one fired. One is the no-dash and the other has the lock. I would take the no-dash wood grips every time. My 686 also has the stamped side plate. It's gorgeous.

While I'd prefer a no-lock, I also prefer a replaceable front sight blade. Kinda of limits my options.

Only pre-locks for me please...

Below is my 6” 686-3 I bought new around 1989. Smoothest factory S&W trigger I own...

Ever notice how pre-lock revolvers are often photographed with the “lock free” left side exposed while many times those with locks are photographed with the lock hidden?

I have a slight preference for pre-lock, but the lock is not a deal breaker for a gun that I want. Either one will serve you well. Your gun, let us know what you pick.

I got the Prelock. Yup rare find here behind iron curtains.
She joins her sisters. Post lock 586 and my trusty pre mod 10.

Pre-lock all the way! If both are in equally good condition and roughly the same price, you will forever regret not buying the pre-lock revolver. The late-model guns might function flawlessly in most cases (the occasional cock-eyed barrel or other quality control issue notwithstanding). But the obsession with pre-locks is about more than just the infernal lock. S&W revolvers from the mid-90s on down were made when S&W was at the top of its game. Those older guns still have a lot of life left in them and there is a good reason why the market values them as much and often more than the new guns.

Some people like the aesthetics of the new guns... or so I hear. But no matter how objective I try to be, they just won't grow on me. As far as I'm concerned, pride of ownership is based on more than mere functionality and when comparing a pre-lock with a post-lock in equal condition at roughly the same price, the pre-lock will win every time. Hands down!

I have both IL (620) and pre lock (686). Both are 4 inch, are great guns, and fantastic shooters. But, since pre lock are rarer, I would go that way at the prices stated by the OP.

Here is a pic of my 686 with Altamont grips.
