29-3 Silhouette (sight tool?)
Howdy
A couple months ago, I picked up this fine piece to add to the collection. I am a huge fan of S&W "long barrels" in all calibers and models.
It had no box but was nice enough to be attractive.
Somewhere I just saw that the front sight on this model may have had an "allen wrench" from the factory. IF so, I had no idea that each "step" might be raised or lowered by wrench. (My eyes are old and tired and can't focus into those 4 little holes very well.)
I sand-bagged this one at 25 yards last week and it was all I could do to get it to print on zero at that range with rear sight all the way Down and front sight all the way Up.
QUESTIONs: Was there an Allen wrench for the front sight steps and is each one adjustable?
An adjustment to each of these front sight "steps" would be wonderful............
Y'all take care, Bo

Yes, there is a .050 allen wrench. Each position is individually adjustable with the setscrews. The number on the selector wheel shows on the left side outside the sight base.
To sight in, get the rear sight about 2 turns off the bottom.
Set the selector wheel to 1. Sight in for elevation at the desired distance using the setscrew marked 1. Set the selector wheel to 2. Sight in for elevation at a different distance using the setscrew marked 2. You can sight in for 4 different distances this way.
In Metallic Silhouette, the distances are - 50, 100, 150, and 200 meters. 200 meters is about 218 yards. Windage is set the normal way on the rear sight.

29-3 Silhouette, Part 2
Toolguy (and all)
So I cleaned a pile of Smiths that I had sand bagged and adjusted at the mountain cabin shooting range last week.
I saved the Silhouette until last. I found that the same Allen wrench that fits Tyler trigger shoes fits the 4 screws on the front sight.
Need help here: IS the pivoting disk the same level all the way around, in other words, flat with no "steps?"
I suspect this because I purposely messed up my sighting from last week and ran all 4 Allen screws up to flush with the top of the sight base. The sight wheel adjustment now turns freely.
Also, since my eyes are pushing 7 decades, I finally got out a magnifying glass and viola'..............the pivoting disk has Numbers !!!!! (1,2,3,4)
So............. is there any rhyme to which number I set to a certain yardage? (Like, should # 1 always be set for closest or vice-versa?)
Sort of confused here and would appreciate any more ideas or tips.
HA..........this means I get to re-adjust that one when I return to my cabin shooting range in the fall - FUN !!!
Thanks in advance and y'all take care, Bo

It's been a few years since I adjusted mine but from what I remember, you can adjust any of the 4 to your desired height. I think the intention was 50, 100, 150 and 200 yds.

Helpful Hint!
If you push down on the rear end of the front sight when turning the wheel you will be able to move the wheel without any resistance! All of mine are set with the shortest yardage at number one. My 44 will shoot almost the same point out to 100yds with my "240gr hunting load", good enough for hunting! I only use 3 steps on the wheel.

Thanks and thanks to all.
I did notice that the front sight had a spring and that it seemed to have "steps" as the wheel was turned.
However, I have now backed all Allen screws up to flush with the top of the sight base and the Wheel turns freely.
My dilemma is whether to set #1 at 25 yards or #4? Does it matter? (I want to sand bag it at 25 yards for my first setting and then go from there::: am thinking 75, 150, and 200.
So does it matter if I set my "closest" range on # 1 or #4 and work up or down from there?
THANKS a bundle!!

You can set it up any way you like. All that matters is that you can remember what distance each number is for. The wheel has one spot that the selected number of setscrew sits on, the other setscrews don't contact anything.

THANKS, ToolG.
I think this answers what I suspected and gives me a reason to go play with it again.
