Default 642 Locking Bolt Pin Failure

Had my fairly new Talo PC 642 at the range yesterday.

Fine shooter.

Nearing 600 rounds through it.

Noticed it was hard to close the cylinder fully or reopen it.

Looked down on the bench to find the locking bolt, spring and pin laying on the shooting bench.

I can only assume that the pin was in the process of falling out, leading to the roughness--and then the entire spring and bolt fell out when the pin made it all the way.

I can likely reassemble the gun--but is it unusual for this pin to loosen and fall out?

Should I use a bit of loctite on the pin?

Or should I just call S&W and have them handle this problem?

Thanks in advance.

No, it's not normal ,, I've been shooting S&W revolvers for probably 50 some years.. and never had that happen..

My usual answer: have a 'smith take a look at it. Maybe something else going on in there. It's a carry piece, it has to work.

Simple solution....peen the end of the retaining pin slightly on a peening block and re-install.

There may be a simple fix, but I prefer an abundance of caution, and if I were in your place I'd shoot an e-mail to S&W and ask them to look at it to make sure there isn't something else wrong.

It should be covered under warranty and they'll send you a label to cover the cost of shipping.

Especially one from the so called Performance Center.

I wouldn't loc-tite the pin. Way too easy to get some of it between the locking bolt and its bore. Then you'd really be in it ! Peening the pin just a bit is a much safer fix.

Larry

It does happen from time to time. I keep a spare set in my parts kit because of that. A slight bend in the pin or peening one end will quickly remedy the situation and you'll be good to go. It's your choice a 5-minute fix that's exactly what they'll do at S&W or a multi-week wait.

Best Regards,

The gun shipped via Fedex to S&W and arrived there yesterday.

No problems having them send me a shipping label.

Was told they currently have a 4 week backup.

Interestingly, the customer service guy gave me some grief for shooting non-US produced ammo (PPU 38 Special 130 grain FMJ).

I told him that his observation was stupid as this ammo meets SAAMI specs...and, if the gun can take +P, then regular PPU 38 Special ammo should be fine.

To be continued.......

Default Gun Returns To Me

FedEx brought me back my 642 this Wednesday, 9.20.2017.

Warranty turnaround roughly 1 month.

Not sure which of my original parts were reused--but the manifest states that the pin was replaced.

Looks as good as new.

Came in a nice padded cardboard box and was wrapped in S&W logo printed paper.

Off to the range this weekend to test it out.

Expect it to be fine.
