Just picked up this 686-4 that I didn't need
Hi all. Between Yankee Marshal's love for Smith revolvers and some posts on here I happened to read, I'd been watching this 2.5" 686 at a local pawn shop for the last month or so. After reading some posts about the current value of these, etc, I decided to pick it up. Not even that interested in revolvers usually, but for some reason it was calling to me. $685 OTD with no box. If there's anything anyone thinks I should know about this gun, please advise.

Nice find!! We never need them.just gotta have them though. I like the grips. I don't think that gun has been shot much, time for you to do something about that. You will never lose money on that one.

Congrats on the 686. Youre probably already aware but I believe most will agree that the -4 is about as good as it gets in the 686 model.

You might be interested to know that the -4 is factory drilled/tapped for a scope. Quite useful on a snub nosed revolver, I'm sure!

One of my off duty sidearms is a 2 1/2" 686. Great revolver.

super nice, off course you don't need it but start shooting it and you may get surprised at the accuracy you can get. You are getting hooked now.

First gun I ever owned. Carried it on duty when I first started in LE. Wish I still had it. I cleaned it and polished it so much it looked like it was nickel plated.

I think some of the first -4's went out with flashed chrome H&T.
OP, what's the s/n prefix? It can be used to estimate the ship date.

That's correct. This is the first I've ever seen of a 2.5" configured as such.

BRD85xx
Right after I picked up the gun I searched this forum for "BRD" and found a post from 2011 where that OP (also with s/n "BRD85xx" was advised the date should be between May and August 1994.
Sound about right?

What is this need thing got to do witth buying guns?
How many Highway Patrolmen do I need? Is 5 enough?
How many S&W 45 colts do I need? 4 enough? How many in 45 acp, is 5 enough.
How about short barreled 44 specials, is 4 enough?
Enough with the need. More with the enjoy!

The earliest date I've seen on a BRD prefix is January of 1994. The earliest -4 November of 1993. So, "yes" the OP's gun is an early -4, and the flash chrome H&T can be expected.

686
The only thing you need to do is to sell it to me!
I have always enjoyed the snub 686. The grips are worth about $200.
Great buy.

You didn't say 686+ so I will presume it is a six shooter. My first 686 is a 686+; actually, all three of them are seven shooters. I think the 2.5" is the best looking of the three - your gun is magnificent.
I don't know all that much about stocks - are those factory or after market? The "rake" on them is pretty nice looking and dramatic!!!
My 2.5" came with rosewood stocks; not sure who made them. The other two came with factory Goodyears on them.

Congrats! Condition looks great! Bought this 686-3 new in '91 or '92. As others have said, shoots so straight.

Judging by the photos in post #1 the grips appear to have had the original gloss finish removed and now look like oiled wood .They are not the later flat sided combats that were crafted from Moradillo wood and shipped from the factory on some 686 models.

Didn't "need" it either (686-4 2 1/2") but when he said $650 out the door......anyway makes for a better picture with it. Serial number is BRJ62XX. Any idea of the date????

Really nice purchase of the 686-4. I have the 686-4 in 4". The 686-4 is regarded by many as the "pinnacle" of the 686 series. All the improvements introduced since the original in 1980, and the last variant to use forged hammer and trigger ( MIM parts arrived with the 686-5 ). But not a thing wrong with any 686 variant. IL/no IL, forged/MIM, whatever. Doesn't matter. IMO, one of the top 8 or 10 revolvers ever made by anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Great find on a equally great revolver. You are going to love taking it to the range so remember the range report afterwards.

The 2 1/2" 686-4 has become the hardest version to find at area shows or advertized in the state gun trader.
I haven't spotted one in the classifieds here in quite a while.
Seems owners are hanging on to their 686-4 snub nose revolvers.
What I see offered for sale are mostly 6" 686 versions.
