Default 629 "target" grips?? Looking for something beefier

So last year I bought a 629 Talo edition and LOVE IT, but the stocks leave much to be desired. While they look fantastic, they're just too narrow for my hands. I used to have a Dan Wesson 357 that was close to perfect in that regard; nice, fully fleshed out grips that really filled out my right palm. I'm looking to get a new set for my 44 that have the same "beefiness" or whatever you'd call it. Right now my 629 is wearing Hogues which have a nicer contour I guess but are still really slim. My 681 has Pachmeyers which are nice and big but even then they don't really have any palm swell. Anyone have any suggestions?

The Culinas might be able to help you. He posts here under username "Kurac", and his wife under username "Grip Maker's Wife". I don't have their web address, but I'm sure a search for 'Culina grips' would get you there. Mrs. Culina may see this and drop in to help you out.

Regards,
Andy

Just remembered another possible option for you: Karl Nill grips imported from Germany. They will ask you for an outline of your hand, then find the closest fit among their options. I bought a pair for my 629 Classic DX, and they're OK.

Best wishes in your search,
Andy

Second for Culina's product. I'm quite shocked the Altamont problem has gone on as long as it has. I'd like to take the pres/CEO of Altamont and S&W to the range and see what they think about full power mags being launched off those worthless pizza cutters. Clearly non-gun people in the gun biz.

Herrett's will make you a grip set that will fit your hand perfectly.
Gun stocks by Herrett's Stocks, Inc.
They have several styles.
Their Jordan Trooper is the largest.
Trooper Bill Jordan was a big man and one of the fastest, most accurate, point shooters to ever live.
He also wrote "No Second Place Winner" on defensive shooting.
I have 2 of these on N frame 44's and they are great.
The extra money for figured walnut is worth it IMHO.
One came back a little TOO big and they reworked the set for free to my satisfaction.
Good company.
I ended up finishing the set shown here with Dembart "London Oil" which is my favorite stock finish..

Another possibility but may be hard to find are the original S&W N frame smooth target grips from the 80's in Goncalo.
The Herretts might end up cheaper at the rate those old grips go for these days.

Here's what the Herretts look like before adding some oil.
They don't come with much finish on at all.
They recommend Formby's but I don't like how it handles nearly as well as the Dembart.
These are now mostly finished but I kind of forgot about them in a drawer until now.
Thanks for jogging my brain on this project!
This is the set they sanded down some and if you look close they are slightly smaller than the 624 set.
This gun has the 500 rubbers on for most shooting as it does recoil.

Beautiful stocks you have there! Of course, the guns are awesome too! I am a Herrett fan. Have them on some of my Smiths. Work for me. Bob

I couldn't agree more about the newer style target stocks leaving so much to be desired. The old style factory K frame target stocks actually fit my hand better than the new style factory N frame target stocks. The first thing I did with my model 27-8 was put the original stocks away for safekeeping. Then I got some factory N frame target stocks from the early 90s, shot with them for a couple years and love them. Then I recently got some Culina, English Walnut, Coke profile. The N frame Coke profile is smaller than the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s style targets and closer to an older K frame factory style target grip (only with more of a palm swell), and its still quite a bit thicker than the new style factory N frame target stocks. I love the Cokes, and pretty much prefer any of the older thicker factory target stocks over the new ones.

I like original S&W smooth targets better than anything else, and have them on all my older guns. But I don't believe they were made for round butt frames, were they? And isn't the OP's gun a round butt?

Regards,
Andy

Karl Nill are my go to aftermarket grips and their smooth replacement (I don't think they have a special name) grips are super good looking and high quality. If you're looking for a larger grip, this is a great choice. I have large hands and they seem to suit me perfectly.

Plus one for the Herrett's Jordan Troopers. With the custom sizing and the covered back strap, they really fill your hand and absorb recoil. Worth every penny.
