What replacement grips should I be thinking of?
I bought my 6" 686 AFS in the mid '90's. Apart from replacing the mainspring with a Wolff ribbed mainspring and a 12 Ib trigger return spring it is stock standard.
It came (and still wears) a Hogue rubber monogrip. Now I happen to like the monogrip very much. I fitted my previous Taurus 6" .357 with a Houge Rosewood grip that was just perfect for my hand. But the rubber one on my 686 is just a little bit too thin widthways to fully fit my palm, and I really do prefer to be able to wrap my palm around the grip not just use my fingers and web of my palm. (I really am wishing I'd swapped grips when I sold my old revolver).
I am leaning towards trying to get another of the Houge's I put on my Taurus. While I know that website photos do not always give an "apples for apples" comparison, the Rosewood grip does appear to be a bit more palm filling than the rubber one does, but thought it an idea to canvas some other options. Any recommendations?

I shoot better......
I shoot better with the Hogue/Pachmehrs but the wooden grips look better by far. Since I'm a shooter/SD kind of guy, my guns have the after market grips.

Grips! Lots of options...
Not to be overlooked in your search are the S&W factory rubber grips (i.e., not Hogues) that come on the currently offered 66 and 686 models -- Model 686 Plus | Smith & Wesson.
You can order these from the company, although they are not shown on the "store" page on S&W's web site.
I added VZ G-10 grips to my 686 and like them a lot. They are hard; the version I got are pretty 'grippy' but I like that; and they fill my hand nicely.

I like the stocks on my 686-1. They will definitely fill the palm of your hand.

I like the Ahrends Retro Targets. I put a set made from Cocobolo on my 686-4. Not as wide as factory targets but still hand filling.
I tried to post a pic but "incorrect file extension"... whatever that means...

I've been looking at some Eagle grips that look like S&W combats that I am a fan of. The originals are 250.00 to 400.00 now-WOW! these are just over a hunert.

Plus one on the VZ grips there are two styles grippy or not so grippy and of course round or square butt. Is this a working gun as opposed to a range gun? Subject to brush and dirt and and being dropped? Wide range of temperatures, maybe sweat and blood, no tears. Point being the G10 types are pretty much indestructible. They draw pretty nicely out of holsters don't get hung up on clothing at least that seems to be tru of the less grippy ones.

Not the fanciest looking stocks, but sure feel right to me! Herrett Targets. Shown here on my 586 no dash from 1983. I have numerous sets, and am always looking for more of the darker ones. Bob

Culina does make some nicceeeeee stuff!  Almost too nice to shoot regularly with......... Use them well.

My 66 wears a set of Badger grips. It's a range gun. I like the look and feel.

My 6" Model 686 ND came to me in a "friends and family" deal sans grips. Two weeks later I added a pair of my favorite factory Smooth FG Combat grips and never looked back. Unfortunately these relatively common grips have begun to command ridiculous prices, but fortunately I've been able to gather the ones I need for my K- & L-frame guns.

Grips are like shoes....... you got to find the right one's for you!!
I like the Spegel Extended Boot grips on 6" L-frames..... and some 4" guns.
Another option are Hogue Wood...... smooth or checkered..... I like the single finger grove option vs the three finger groves as they push my little finger to far down the grip.
