Default 4 inch Barrel Model 629-4 Questions/Input
I came across a used Model 629-4 with 4 inch barrel in the original blue plastic case but no paperwork. The firing pin is hammer mounted and no internal lock. The Spec. Ord. number is 7090, and my understanding is the first digit of this number stands for the last digit of the year manufactured (1997) and the 090 stand for the day manufactured being the 90th day in 1997 (March 31st). The gun is dirty and obviously has seen some shooting but all cylinders have a measured b/c gap of .006 and there is only slight endshake of just .001. I am thinking of picking it up as a shooter and woods carry gun. Any thoughts on desirability of this model and its value? Thank you in advance for the input.

If the financial aspect of the deal seems right to you---it should already be yours. Four inch S&W 44 mags are the cream of the crop. I sadly traded away a 29-2 several years ago, and I still am mad at me for doing it. It was a real shooter.

I think the -4 is considered by most as the top series of the 629's.
IMO, 4" is the best all-around length. I presently have an excellent condition -4 Mtn. gun and is one of my favorites.
Do you care to share the listed price and can you post pics?
As for a shooter/carry gun in .44 mag, you'd be hard pressed to do better.

They're great guns. A 4 inch 629-4 is a keeper. Just my 2 cents, but if in good shooter condition anything under $800 is good. Sometimes higher depending on condition and location.

One of my favorite models of the .44 magnum. Great for carry in the woods, balances very well in the hand and extremely accurate.

Mine is a 629-5 with combats. Got the box but, no tools and traded a 27-2, 8 3/8" barrel for the 629 with boot! Never regretted that deal!

Well I couldn't stand it and had to post a photo of the .44 family.

629-5 Classic DX, 6.5", 629-5 4" and the 29-4 3".

I never thought that I needed one .44, much less three but, each has its on special place and use. The DX has taken one 5 point cull buck and is looking for more.

I can only thank (blame) the members of this forum for the acquisition of the 4" but, it is one of my favorite hunting companions.

If the price doesn't scare you, jump on it with both feet ASAP .
Very desirable in my book. I prefer those with the hammer mounted firing pins. They just seem to be assembled with more care.

That one should have the "endurance package" as, I believe all after the -3 had it. It's stainless-so the cosmetics will improve greatly with elbow grease. This is not a gun I would regard as just some beater woods gun-they ain't makin' any more of these.

I bought my several yrs ago at a gun show in Az . It has the endurance pkg , hammer mounted firing pin and no key lock . It is a fine shooter and not for sale . IMO I felt it was / is the best of Smith 44 magnums . If you can handle the price I would get it .

If the timing / carry up is correct - & the price is reasonable, I'd grab it. It'll clean up just fine.

The 4" 629-4 is a great gun. Truly wish I still had mine...

Not yours, but another fortuitous dumb luck purchase I have made that will enhance my retirement spending account in the near future. At the time the purchase price was considered a 'year early', today it is a "Great Bargain".

Yep, many here including me would have been quite content if they had stopped reinventing the wheel after the dash four engineering change on the 629's.
