I wanted to try something different for my Model 60 3". I went with a set of Altamont grips that give my Model 60 a more square butt grip. I can get all 3 of my fingers on the grip. The width of the grips are like panels but as you can see extend the butt. The back is open.

The fit is excellent and the grips appear well made. Now to try them at the range with some .357 Magnum loads!

Very nice looking. I have a 3" Model 60 that never felt quite right in my hands. Maybe some Altamont grips might do the trick.

They are similar to the "factory" (I think Altamont) stocks on the 60 Pro. Gives it more of a vertical, semi-auto like grip angle.

Those look really nice!

Could be like the factory. The Altamont site indicates they made these for SW as a round-to-square conversion for J frames.

Those make a sweet-lookin' little iron, but I bet it's still not much fun with full-throttle .357 ammo. Enjoy !

I wish I could learn to love "laminate" grips, I try but every time I consider buying some they just scream plywood at me and plywood just isn't pretty. Real walnut , rosewood , cocobolo, or any of the fancy exotic woods just looks so much nicer. I usually wind up buying the solid wood type. I even prefer black plastic grips to the wood laminates.....wish I could get over this prejudice towards laminate wood but at this stage (over 60) I don't think I can.

Looks great, but those grips are pretty skinny at the top to be comfortable with full power loads. I would want something wide and rounded at the top.
Maybe they will be OK for you, maybe not.

I was able to get to the indoor range and shoot some .38 Spls. The gun handled very well. No complaints.

I will try .357 Mags when I visit my outdoor range next week.

Not to steel this thread but i intend to put a set of factory targets on my 60-15 when i get it back . They seem to fit my hand well and should help with the hot .357 loads , I will fit a spacer inside to fit to the round butt .
Any thoughts to this

Which grips are you thinking about?

Only that you probably won't even need the spacer... where I've used the target grips on a round butt the rest of the frame outline and the frame pin locate the frame in the grip well enough to hold it in place. I used them on a couple of pre-War I-frames which are shorter, and they still worked fine. If I were REALLY dissatisfied with the fit, I'd be tempted to glass bed them.

Guess what i was worried about would their be excess force on the grips when using .357 in the gun. A spacer fitted at the round to square cut out of the butt, it would also take some of the strain off the locating pin

These are Altamont/S&W combats on my 686-4. They fit perfectly and are nice looking, great quality, and reasonably priced

I have a set of Altamonts on my Model 60 no dash and I can't get over the plywood look either. I plan to do better.

Are they laminated?

They look like it to me.

Some may object to the laminate look. I think that for a field or EDC revolver they make a lot of sense. They look nice and seem impervious to sweat. They also shrug off some of the bumps that would dent traditional wood grips. I spend a lot of time in the woods or farm and usually carry a revolver of some sort. I learned real fast that "real wood" grips don't belong there.

I just ordered my third pair, they work, look good and very reasonably priced.
Cocobolo Retro Combats with a tung oil finish are on the model 58 in my avatar . They tame the 41 magnum recoil because they fit my regular sized human hand.
The hardest part is selecting which exotic wood to have them made. I order mine unfinished and lovelingly rub in many thin coats of tung oil finish. It affords a good grip even with sweaty hands and is easy to maintain.

Asthetics are subjective . Early laminated material did look plywood-y . For purely utilitarian, ugly is less important than functional.

But current laminated material with narrower layers, and more wood like colors , such as used by Altamont are much better than a sharp stick in the eye . I would be willing to use them, and on a working gun consider them a step up visually from rubber ( and plenty of my working guns wear rubber ) .
