625-2 .45 Cal Model of 1988
Another errant 625 off the street! This afternoon I spotted this example while making my weekly rounds at the Reno Cabelas. She has been used, but not abused - included box and tools. Not bad for $680 and change.
I've owned two 5" Model of 1989s, but never knew there was an actual Model of 1988, I just assumed folks had a 1989 and were mistakingly calling it a 1988. A little research proved I am not as smart as I look.
Any further info on this model would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lou

I have the model of 1989 in 5". However your newly acquired model of 1988 is a very nice looking revolver! Congrats on that acquisition I can't share any particular info on the model of 1988 but I can certainly appreciate it!

Congratulation on a good buy
My 625 Model of 1988 has been in the family since they came out.
First Uncle Hal had it, then it came to me. I changed the grips and cylinder release when I got it

Hmmm
I wonder if the ship date based on the serial number jives with the special order date? From what I've read, the serial number, special order number and product code are consistent with other examples of the original .45 Cal Model of 1988.

I had an 1988, and sold-it to my son-in-law, and replaced it with a 1989 Model. Both are exceptional revolvers.

Like my 21YO son would say, "That's a SOLID buy!"
Similar 625-2's with the stamped side plate are (from what I've seen) much less common. I've been finding some in the $1k - $1.5k range.

I am not sure what difference it makes, but my sideplate is stamped with the S&W logo. Just assumed all 1988s were.
Thanks for the 411.

My 625-2 1988 is rolled marked Smith & Wesson on the left side of the barrel and 45 CAL Model Of 1988 on the right side and shipped with Pachmayr rubber grips.Mine has a pinned black ramp front sight.Inside the barrel shroud is stamped a small S and there's a F stamped on the rear of the cylinder. The left side of the grip frame has an assembly number 71996. and a large S.On the right side of the grip frame is an S inside a triangle and a G inside a circle plus number 7934.On the back of the side plate is the same 71996 assembly number and a large S stamped in the metal.
The 625-2 1989 has etched markings on the barrel and shipped with Hogue rubber grips.
All 625-2 have 5" barrels if original as shipped from the factory.

Thanks! Mine also has the black ramped front sight. What side is your S&W stamp? Mine's on the side plate, others are below the cylinder release.

The S&W logo on my 625-2 1988 is on the left side below the cylinder release.
Mine shipped 47 days after yours.

Are those Altamont grips? Nice looking revolver! My 625-8 looks very similar but with rosewood grips and Brass Bead "Patridge" front sight. All my other revolvers have ramped front sights so I wasn't so sure about the Patridge on the 625-8... then I shot it. That gold/brass colored bead really helps with combat style shooting; just putting the front sight on the center of the target 7-8 yards out and squeezing the trigger till she's empty, ejecting, reloading another moon clip, and dumping another (6) into the target. My 625 is our dedicated "Woods Gun." So it gets shot and carried with a fair amount of .45Super's...

Yep! Thanks for the compliments, Ham. Those grips came-off my Lew Horton 610. I changed the original front sight to a factory 'red-ramp' insert. I too, am a hugh fan of the .45 Super round. Great woods-round for stopping all kinds of interlopers.

Bought one when they came out...and I sold it.Now,that was dumb!Good news is a couple weeks ago,one of my friend showed up at the range and by tracing the various owners between him and me,I now know that it is my old 1988.
I am now in the process to heavily bug him away from it so he sells it to me.

Nice! I had one when I lived in Alaska. It was the most accurate Revolver I ever owned. It Loved Sierra 185 grainers and 700x.
