Default New Production Model 17

Besides having the internal lock, any problem with these?

Have a Colt GCNM Ive been trying to sell and it just isn't moving so am thinking about trading it for a M17 which was the only thing I found interesting at the LGS.

Are They still making a Mod 17? I know they do a Mod 617 (stainless), but not sure about the blued model. I have 617-6 which shipped in 2006 which I have shot considerable, and have experienced no problems other than the continual problem of over tight chambers making extraction a little difficult after several cylinderfulls have been shot. Since I had a Manson finishing reamer on hand I just did the 617 and have no problems at all now. Very accurate.

I suspect they work fine; the current finish is more black than blue. However, you can find a pretty nice used K-22 Masterpiece/prelock model 17 for the MSRP.

I saw a new production Mod 17 at a local gunshop just this past week.
It had a price of $699 on it, looked new but said used on the tag.
I asked the employee to let me see it because it's the first new one I had a chance to look over.

I have a few older K-22s, pre model numbered guns up thru several dash changes.

So I didn't want to like it.

As Murphydog said, it looked black not blued. The frame is different than the old ones.
BUT the cylinder locked up well with no play or end shake. The hammer and trigger were lined up and didn't drag. Trigger let off was very good.
The revolver felt good and solid. Single and double action felt like a quality revolver, not cheap and gritty with a double action like pulling a tooth.
A very nice double action rimfire revolver IMHO.

I liked it but I ain't gonna buy it. No sir.

Unless I can haggle on the the ask price!

GF

They are selling them at my local Cabela's... or at least they are trying to sell them. They aren't moving many at a tagged price of $999.

I'll admit I was very tempted to order one in through my favorite local dealer when I first saw one, IL notwithstanding. I'd had a terrible time trying to find the right pre-IL K-22 at the right price in my local market and importing can be problematic in MA on a "pre-list" gun (and I am not a C&R license holder). In fact, I was all set to place the order when another pre-IL Model 17 suddenly appeared "for trade only" in my local market.

Sadly, the trade thing never worked out (a long, complicated story)... but it did re-motivate me to keep trying for a pre-IL instead of just settling for a new one with IL.

That said, I still think the new ones are pretty darn nice guns. If I didn't have to order one in to get a good enough price, I'd probably still go for one. But $999+Tax to buy one in stock at Cabela's is out of the question for dirt poor retired old me.

I've never heard anything bad about the new 17s but for the price I would rather have a used K-22. I consider the 17 superior to the 617 though, why would I want that heavy barrel lug on a .22?

I bought one new for $871 in July. I came very close to not buying it for the price, but then I fondled it again...

The Mod 17 isn't for the shooter who just wants a fun range toy (Timex guy), it's just too expensive. But if you want a fine firearm you can appreciate (Rolex guy), it's worth every penny.

GF,

If you know where a new one is for $699, drop whatever you are doing and GO BUY IT.

$871 is about the price it was for at the LGS...

As for buying an older one, I don't think I'd ever spend that much money on a 22...goal here is to trade/get rid of an existing firearm I don't need/want for something I might get out to shoot.

I figure I can probably use the Colt GCNM i am trying to get rid of as a straight up trade for the M17 I saw,.
