If the information is not published (common with special runs, but not with more modern standard production S & Ws), my impression is that means the information could be found but the factory is not motivated or willing to share it. You could also imagine they would not want to reveal the size of the market for a particular gun and configuration to the competition.

Not their fault, just not a priority.

Don't know, but can make a educated guess. The -10 was a standard cataloged gun from 1996 to 2001. A six year production run.

I figure S&W would want to sell at least five hundred to a thousand a year, in order to make it worth their while and keep it cataloged. Otherwise, they would offer it as limited time gun or special order.

With all that in mind, I'd guess total production in the 3,000 to 6,000 range. Maybe more.

It was a fairly popular variation. Many members here have one. I can remember seeing them routinely on the shelves of most gun shops I went into back then.

Unlike the Kernel I don't remember seeing very many.... course I was in my PC auto phase and not really looking at J-frames.

That said; I do have one of those micro-686s .... which has become my 21st Century "kit gun"....... my advice if you can find one grab it..... I'd be temped to get a second if I saw one in a LGS.

I have no idea how many were made. I do know they do not show up regularly. I had one several years ago that now belongs to a sister in law.
It took me a long time to locate another acceptable specimen that a fellow forum member was kind enough to let me purchase. This one will not leave my possession. I would buy another in an instant if it came up for a reasonable price. Both of the ones I have had were very good shooters, well balanced and carry very well. I never shot 357 out of the first one, but this second one got 20 rounds of 158 gr 357 shot through it this past weekend. Not too bad for recoil. I would not suggest feeding the little J frame a steady diet of 357, but it is quite manageable with it if the need or desire arises.

..probably the best J-frame ever made...

In the shops I went to in New England during their production I didn't see too many and bought the two used ones I did find. Both were stock except one was Mag-Na-Ported. According to the SCofS&W this may have been a Lew Horton gun.

Picked up an extra cylinder assembly and it dropped right into the stock one. Sent it to TK Custom and had them it rechamber for .38 Super and mill for moon clips. The gun will now shoot .38, .357, 9mm and .38 Super...
