Default Trying to decide on my next wheel gun- Help!

I have a 629-6 in .44 mag, a Model 60 (.38spl) and a Model 60-15 (.357 mag).

I also have a Colt Combat Commander in .45 acp, a Walther PP in .380, and a Glock 26 in 9mm (I mention these because I don't want to duplicate these calibers again).

What do you guys think should be my next gun. I'm thinking about a .22lr S&W but I'm a short-barrel kind of guy and I'd like to shoot both .22 mag and .22lr to get more bang for my buck (sorry for the pun). I'd entertain other calibers, too - I'm just starting off thinking about the .22.

Thanks guys!

Rich

The J Frame Mod. 63 Kit Gun in .22 LR is a great little gun to pack. I have one that is accurate and lots of fun. I would love to own a K Frame Masterpiece in .22 LR, and I regret ever letting my 617 out the door back in the day. If you want interchangable .22 LR and .22 Mag. I would recommend the Ruger Single Six.

Thanks for the ideas but I don't buy Rugers. "It's just a thing with me."

I don't think Smith ever made a LR/Mag combo, you may be out of luck with a combo.
One of the sweetest shooting pistols of that kind is a K22. They are 6" but I don't think there is a finer .22 revolver. For shorter you could get an 4" 18, and I think they made some 4" 48s. I'm sure they've made some snubbies in both, I've just never found utility in a sub-4" .22.
Happy hunting

617 seems obvious. I don't have one but would like one. As for avoiding 'redundancy'in caliber, I understand. But, differences in frame size and barrel lengths can make the oh-so-redundant seem SPECTACULARLY unique. Just saying. Don't let me sway you from your resolve. Lol. I think a 686 or 586 plus should be at the top of your must-have list. As they are in mine. But again, in the spirit of your query, and avoiding redundancy, why not something In 45 LONG??? I'd love me a mountain gun like that. Not sure on the model numbers, but you can find.

I tend to fall into the "I like older Smiths camp," but the last .22 lr I bought was brand new. It's a Model 43C, which fits your short-barrel preference.

It's an all-aluminum Centennial so easy, no-snag carry and, oh, so light. I put on Hogue Tamer grips, and it's simply a pleasure to shoot. There is a .22 mag equivalent, but they don't have interchangeable cylinders.

If you truly wouldn't mind changing calibers and going back some years, I'd heartily recommend a Model 30 (round butt) or 31 (square butt) in .32 Long. Nothing but fun to shoot! Before Model numbers (about '58) these were called .32 Hand Ejector and .32 Regulation Police, respectively. They were built on the I-frame, and their J-frame equivalents became the Models 30-1 and 31-1.

One guy's thoughts.

I really like 22s. And I really like revolvers. But I am done with 22 revolvers.

Rimfire cartridges are hard to ignite so a 22 revolver will typically have a much heavier trigger pull than other calibers. For some reason the small 22 revolvers are worse than the big ones, maybe the lack of mass in the hammer requires a stronger spring. You can buy springs that will reduce the trigger pull but at the price of reduced reliability, particularly with cheap bulk ammo.

Since some 22 ammo can be really dirty they tend to bind up or have sticky extraction more often than centerfire cartridges.

For both of these reasons if you want a small revolver with low recoil I would go with a 32 if you can find one. Ammo is obviously going to be more expensive but I think you will like shooting it more than you would a .22.

For a .22 I would recommend something like the S&W M&P 22c if you want a small, light, reliable and inexpensive plinker or something like the Ruger Mk4/Browning Buckmark/S&W Victory if you want a larger but more accurate gun.

Well, You can try and locate a 650 or 651 with the auxiliary 22LR cylinder, but be prepared to spend in excess of a $1000.00. Or, as mentioned, a Ruger Single Six convertible with a 4 5/8" barrel for around $300.00 to $400.00. They are fun to shoot.

At some point, you have to switch from throwing money at guns,,
to artistically pursuing niche guns that put a smile on your face.

Niche guns are not available every day,, so the hunt is part of the fun.
Something like a 617 with a target trigger, and target hammer,,,

I do not pursue impossible to find guns,, there has to be a possibility of a win,,,

I would lead you in a different direction by recommending you at least check out a couple of older revolvers in 32/20 caliber .The 32/20 while not well known I have found to be a great accurate caliber that is easy shooting and quiet comparatively .So I would recommend finding a shooter in 32/20 aka 32WCF mine is a well used and carried by an old trapper nickel version in about 50 percent as far as finish goes with 6 inch barel a set of wolf springs and Grashorn stocks with heavy bark left on has truly turned this revolver into my new sidearm for a outside working companion .So my vote goes to the oldie but still very useful 32/20 .

Here is my 651. It's got the magnum cylinder installed. I have other guns to shoot 22 LR in so I have never shot it with anything other than mags.
Also including pictures of my 351C. This gun shoots much better and with a much better trigger than I ever expected. The 651 too.
22 magnum is a fun cartridge. Loud but fun. The price has been coming down the last few months. It's still expensive compared to 22LR but I have found some CCI online for about 20 cents a round compared to 30 cents per just a few months ago. It's nice to have a rifle also.

To me, there's two kinds of gun buying. 1) There's a gun for sale, a regular cataloged gun, and I think it's something I want, so I buy it. 2) I'm hunting for something unusual and different on the used market, and when I come across it for the right price I'm going to buy it. 2a) Go on Gunbroker and pay high retail (or more) for an unusual gun.

In the #1 category all I can really think of is a 617.

#2 category is the aforementioned K22/17. I happen to have a K22 I hunted for. If you're looking for something really different, find a .44 Special like a Lew Horton 24/624, a 696, or 296Ti. Or a snub 657 (.41 Magnum) maybe. Neither will be cheap to shoot. In that arena, maybe a K38/Model 14 even though you already have a .38. Much more enjoyable to shoot than a Model 60.

I like the way several posters suggested getting something unusual and special. Maybe a lifetime kind of purchase.

If so, I can not recommend the Colt Diamondback 22 lr highly enough.

I have several and I can say that they equal or exceed my Colt Pythons. The bluing is the very best. A deep blue that almost looks wet.
The fit and finish is the finest Colt produced. The triggers are clean and break like a glass rod. The grips are beautiful. Accuracy is outstanding !

If you handle one, you will fall in love.
This will become your show and tell; as well as your fondle gun.

You get what you pay for. This gun will go from $1500 to $2000 for a nice example. It will only increase in value. But you will never sell it.

I'm a Colt guy through and through. If I thought a Diamondback 22 was worth $1500-$2000 I would have one. But I don't, and instead I own a 17-4. Besides the obvious action difference, which by the way I absolutely love the V spring actions, I highly doubt the DB's performance or build quality is any better than the 17.

If Diamondback prices were realistic, then I wouldn't stop recommending them, but the prices of "snakes" nowadays is simply not worth what they are, at least to me. Colt's quality wasn't that exceptional, as I could probably guess when your DB was made by the "wet" bluing comment.

To each their own though and enjoy your DBs. They are a good option but many will avoid them just like me due to price.

My suggestion would be a nice pre-mod. 17 K22 Masterpiece.
IMHO they are among the finest .22 revolvers ever manufactured and are a pleasure to shoot.

Default 63

I've previously rented a 617 and thought it was just a lot of weight/bulk to shoot a 22. I purchased a 3" 63 and think it's a lot of fun in a small package still holding 8 rounds. Trigger pull is pretty heavy though, but if you're used to revolvers shouldn't be an issue. I like some of the other suggestions on the k22 as they seem a little more elegant but I think they only have a 6 shot capacity (?) which could be a drawback.

If I was a doctor and I was looking for a special short barrelled .22 LR revolver, I'd get myself a 2-1/2" barrel Colt Diamondback... For me, it's a S&W M-34...:-)

Even though not available in short barrel, the Model 48 is a fantastic 22 mag. Might want to check one out. Good Luck!

My 6" model 617 is ideal for me because it has the same weight and design as my 6" model 686. I see no difference in trigger pull. I shoot both at paper targets at my gun club. I've owned the 686 for 20 years, the 617 less than 2 years. I must admit I would rather have a 6 round 617 rather than the 10 round I have. The main reason is our gun club has a 5 round loading limit. The more closely spaced 10 round is a bit more difficult to line up the cylinder correctly for your first shot.

At minimum you should have a model 18 in inventory.

Yes, I agree, the 4 inch Md 18 is such a fun gun to take into the field or the range and have a blast! I have a Md 17 but I just don't care much for the 6 inch barrel. I also love my kit guns which include a 5 inch Md 63 and a 2 inch Md 34.

Since you do not want to duplicate calibers I suggest one or more of these:
4" K22 with adjustable sights.
4" or 6" K frame 32-20. Fixed or adjustable.
Easy to find - I Frame 32 Hand Ejector or 32 Reg Police. Or go harder to find and search out a terrier in 32 long.

Whatever .22 you choose, make sure it has adjustable sights. Relatively cheap ammo allows you to do a LOT of shooting. I'm always trying to beat my best score.

You currently have a N-frame and two J-frame S&W revolvers. So obviously, you need a K-frame to go along with them.
You can't do better than a Model 18. Its my favorite revolver. The K size frame is ideal for the best accuracy and feel. While the 4" barrel is a great all around length for everything from casual plinking to small game.
They're getting hard to find as those that have 'em tend to keep 'em. Nor are they cheap. But if you get one, you'll never regret it and keep it forever.

The first thing that came to my mind was''get rid of the Glock and get a steel framed 9mm''(lots of them old S&W 539,Browning HP,CZ....).But then,I decided to refrain since in life,it is different strokes for different folks.
So a more thought out answer would be a model 17/617.You'll never wear one out, they're fun yo shoot and they are great to get back to the basics after letting the hammer down on 50 full power .44 mag.
