Default and old friend came home, 649-1

I have owned this gun for a long time, bought it new, SN# BDB71xx.

However about 12 years ago my daughter decided she wanted it for her personal use.
So as any father would do, I let her have the gun, ( even though at the time,I was wishing she would have picked out a gorgeous re-nickeled terrier in 32 that I had at the time)

I have had a few brief reunion's with it on a couple of occasions, when they would come and visit and we would head to the range.

However recently she decided she was in love with the way one of my bottom feeders was performing in her hands a TP9SF in OD green. and stated she would like to trade guns with me. ( I know I am trading my gun for my gun) but what ever it takes to make my only daughter happy.

so we were both grinning when she left, right up to the point she tells me not to trade off the little revolver, she might want it back as well as the Canik

I cant win for loosing

anyway I cleaned it up this afternoon, and took a photo, I have the man grips (original magnas as well as a set of black good-years) around here somewhere.

maybe I want get laughed at to much if I open carry with the pink grips

I have two 649 .38s. I know these guns aren't very trendy now days but a 649 is my primary EDC. I have a variety of holsters for them so carry is possible regardless of costume. Pocket carry is a favorite since I can access the gun without it being obvious. I usually carry two speed strips and keep .38 ammo squirreled away in various places.

I can imagine that you are glad yours is back.

I share your enthusiasm for the 649 in .38 Special.
I love mine (a 649-2).

The humpbacks are beautiful, solid little guns

They can be very comforting little guns. Someone sketchy approaches and you just put your hand in your pocket. Now you aren't so far behind on the curve if the situation heads south.

My love for the '49s started in 1980 with the purchase of my Md 49. It was and still is an amazing gun for accuracy and concealment. But back in the mid 1990s I bought my Md 649-2 in .357. It has been my most often CCW and a true favorite of mine since. As stated above, they don't carry a lot of panache but dam, they are fine weapons. If you don't have one, you should consider getting one. You won't regret it.

There are some days when I wish one of my other revolvers would turn into a 649-2. Around town the .38 is fine. However, I have a hunting lease and a farm in rural S.C. I have had bears approach me while filling up a feeder and there are wild hogs on the farm. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see a need for a handy .357. I may have to pick one of those up.

...and keep .38 ammo squirreled away... Cool post, white cloud! IIRC, the 649 was a hot item in the early to mid 1980s: stainless steel and the .38 LHP. I also have 2, very slick shooters. Today's PC J-frames can't touch them for DA smoothness. Reminds me: got to get them out for some trigger time.

P.S. Bears? Wild hogs??

A lot of people don't think of bears as being present in S.C. That is incorrect. The upstate mountains has them as do the coastal counties. I have a hunting lease in the upstate. Seeing a bear while adding corn to a deer feeder is pretty common. I have had to throw rocks at a few of them to keep some space. A .357 is comforting in case the rocks don't work.

Is the design of the "Humpback" trigger and hammer mechanism inherently smother than the Centennial internal hammer design? A question from a certified "J Hound".
