Question If keeping just one S&W, which one would be?

If you had to keep only one of your S&W wheel guns, which one would it be?

For me I think it would be my 586 M no dash because it's the best all-rounder at everything I may need: hunting, defense, target, moving to Canada etc.

Sorry, snubies! You are the best in a pocket but are not allowed north of border, besides being a compromise of a wheel gun in general

I found a 3" 66-2 a few months ago at a great price (the local store owner thought it was just a regular snubbie).

For me, it would be my Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum."
Reason: I shoot it better than any other handgun I've ever shot.

S&W Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum" in .357 Magnum.

My current collection of S&W revolvers:
- 4th model "Pocket Gun" in .32 S&W
- Model 34-1 "Kit Gun" in .22 LR
- Model 15-4 "Combat Masterpiece" in .38 Special
- Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum" in .357 Magnum
- Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt

Thanks for looking at my Combat Magnum and my humble collection of S&W revolvers.

God bless
Birdgun

For me, it would be my 686+ with 6" barrel. If I could only have one, I would value long distant accuracy over ease of carry. Does everything I ask of it & does it well. Hmmm.... can't say that about a whole lot else.

I'll admit my 586 slightly out shoots my 686+, but who knows, I might need that extra round some day.

Nice collection Birdgun - very nice!

I've got a couple of J frames a 640 Pro Series and a 360PD AirLite:

A model 69 in .44 Magnum:

But my 547 would be the one I'd keep:

I'm going to make my answer closer to the 21st Century - the M&P R8 (or TRR8). Ridiculously accurate shrouded barrel design, great balance with alloy frame, 8-Shot, Moon Clips, Great Action, Rails top and bottom - An unparalleled total package from hunting, large defensive carry, and a beast on my nightstand with mounted 800 lumen light.

Honorable mention: PC 627 2.625 - my favorite concealable carry revolver; and, 586 L-Comp - a full carbon steel beast, and one of the best looking S&W's in modern history.

There they all are in Picture 4.

Man you guys all have great choices ,and great taste in guns I might add. I would go with my old 32/20 6 inch k frame from the 1920s .stop laughing. Its easy to shoot easy to carry and will do anything I need a handgun for as it has for decades .That is assuming I could still own long guns and ammo and components to reload.

My "keeper" would be this 66-4. Best trigger of the bunch and impressively accurate to boot.

The first handgun I ever bought was a Model 19 (probably a -4). I suppose if I had to keep just one, that's what it would be.

Default Keep only one

If I could keep ONLY ONE of my S&W revolvers, it would be my 686-4

It would be a tough choice. Probably my dad's Highway Patrolman (it saved his life multiple times so maybe it still has some guardian angel left in it).
Potentially my 386 XL Hunter because the only thing better that 6 shots of .357 would be 7 shots. Also the weight on that thing loaded is crazy light.
Or, along those same thoughts, it might be my 627 PC since the only thing better than 7 shots of .357 is 8
If I have to keep it with concealability in mind, my 586 L-Comp.

My model 29 which I have owned since the early 70s. Bought used with a worn finish and a bad chamber, I took it to S&W and had it repaired with a new cylinder and nickeled. The S serial number gives it a date of 1956-57 in the big book. I shot it frequently in the old days, it now resides in the safe in deserved retirement.

Interesting OP pics. I have a 586 -1 6" and my sights have no orange on the front and no white on the rear. Have those sites been upgraded or is that a newer pistol? I didn't think Smith had those blue boxes back then either.

Now that I own a Kimber K6S this is an easy question to answer. That would be my 586L comp.

I have a 38 model 642 that I really like but have to say if I could only have one it would be my new victory 22, it's perfect, ammo is way cheaper and the pistol is more fun to shoot targets with that the little 38.

It would be my 3" M66-2 that I bought new in August of 1986 (Ashland).
My 4" M66-1 private purchase duty gun would be my second choice.
My 3" M624 (Lew Horton) .44 Special next.

I've actually have made that decision. I've collected S&W's over the years, but currently have 1 (ok 3, but my two J frames don't count). After scaling down, the only S&W still in my safe is a 22-4. It currently wears Eagle Heritage Targets, but I can slim it down with some service stocks and a t-grip.

It's great for SD with HP's, or can transition into a trail gun with Buffalo Bore HC auto rim or super ammo. May even work for hunting.

I do have my eye on a local 28-2 though.

For me, my 629 6"

I've put red dots on other guns, only to shoot them like my 629 with iron sights.

I agree. I'd go with my R8 due to the versatility, the pleasure it is to shoot, and how easy it is to shoot well. It's the easy choice, especially since I get to keep my Ruger LCR (which is my pocket revolver of choice).

Thanks. It's a 1983, no dash, factory marked "M". It's all original as it was shipped new - orange/red insert in front and white outline on rear. It also has the smooth combat trigger. I understand that these -sights, trigger, etc. - were factory options back in 80s when ordering a new 586/686. I am not the original owner, just the current and last - got it only few months ago unused in its original box with the new price tag still attached.

My heart says: K frame magnum either 19-3 or 66 no dash both 4 inch. But my brain says: 686 4in. My second choice, made by my brain says: Model 69 4 1/4 in. All of these choices are made looking through a younger man's eyes because currently all are good choices. If I had another 25/50 years of the outdoor lifestyle ahead of me, my brain. probably, still does a better job of picking the most versatile guns available.

If I could keep only one of my S&W revolvers, and I have many to chose from that would make it difficult to do so, I would have to go with my S&W 686-5, 7 shooter with a 4" barrel. After years of shooting, backpacking, concealed carry, reloading the 357 magnum I feel it is the best for me. Simple, powerful or mild, no magazines to lose or damage, .38 or .357 and a solid built stainless steel seven shooter with a frame mounted firing pin. Built for a life time of fun and protection, easy to carry and care for.

This gun would survive even the harshest of times if it came to it.

My choice:

Or my S&W 65-1, even more simpler.... six shot with fixed sights. Nothing to miss alien if dropped. And if I needed an auto loader, it would be my Glock 17 with four 17 round 9mm magazines. How do you like that?

Agree on that!

The model was also the first 7 shot 586/686, right?

A beauty of a revolver and one that can act well too. It's super cool with the matte black finish (I wonder what sort of finish is that really), the functional porthole, the 3" barrel.

How durable is the finish?

This is a great thread, and something I've sort of been lightly pondering myself. If I could keep only one, which one would it be? This is a tough question.

The one I'd like to keep most would either be the NM 66-8 4.25" (which holds my personal record for distance ringing steel), or the latest 66-8 snubby, which has been darned near perfect with any load I've fed it so far, and is my personal favorite at the moment:

Ironically, the one I'd most likely keep if I could have only one is also the one I'm often most tempted to trade off, a 686-6 3":
[IMG][/IMG]

Why? It's really accurate for me, being a 3" makes it a little easier to pack, 7 shots, the stainless finish is easy to maintain, and darned if it doesn't feel like I could beat on it all day long without it putting up a lick of fuss.

1958 I-frame .32 Regulation Police Model 31, with TT & TH.

With the exception of the target add-ons it's identical to the one my grandmother taught me to shoot in 1959 when I was seven.

If I could only have one? That's not going to happen. I will not be giving up anything. Cold, lifeless fingers, etc.

66-2, 6 inch barrel, target hammer, target trigger

I'd really like to find a no-dash or 66-1 with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder.

My favorite is my 60-10 w/ Crimson Trace grips. Concealable yet enough gun for any situation I'm likely to encounter and is easy to shoot and surprisingly accurate.

M629-3 with 8-3/8" full lug barrel, unfluted cylinder, and Patridge front sight. When I bought it used in 1990, it was the most accurate handgun I owned. I've lost some of my shooting ability from not going to the range often enough. Range time and fishing time will increase this fall and winter in Georgia.

Has to be my no dash model 586 4 inch. I was a brand new trooper, and purchased the first 586 that hit the shelves. Carried it as my duty gun until they forced to make the switch to semi auto. Did pretty well with it shooting a lot of PPC, and it provided great comfort more than a few times when carried as a duty weapon.

To this day, I could carry that revolver loaded with .357 mag 125 grain SJHP's anywhere, and not feel at a disadvantage.

That's easy, the one I kept, a 57-6, 41 mag, 6", blue it has Culina combats with the medallion. It, and my Les Baer, UTC, 45 auto, would be all I would keep if I ever consolidate, like I've been threatening the wife that I'm going too. Some day

Not an easy choice for sure but if I Had to choose to keep only one it would have to be my first S&W revolver purchase that started me down the road to oh so many more.
