Default Researching a performance Center 629-3

I was offered this 629-3 3 inch Performance Center. I was told it was factory engraved. It was also told it was from a small series they did. Does anybody have any info?

Thanks

A seldom seen "raised" thumb piece. Uber cool! 🤙

One of the first Performance Center guns ever made. Literally, hand made, piece by piece, by the best gunsmiths S&W had.

I've seen them as -3's and -4's, but never an engraved one. Is the PC logo present? I see the spot for it but can't make it out in the photos.

Does it have a HMC or PCJ serial number?

I found this info from a old auction (icollector) of another example:

This revolver is a limited edition of 25. Features a leaf and vine engraving on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. The standard markings are encased in scrolls along with a "10 of 25" marked on the ejector shroud. Equipped with a red highlighted front sight on a ported barrel, checkered matte hammer, smooth trigger, and three finger target grips with S&W medallions. Complete Performance Center hardcase with label numbered to gun taped to lid, Starlight black plastic case, Tasco shooting glasses, cleaning kit, ear plugs, and speed loader. Includes Certificate of Authenticity that confirms serial number.
BBL: 3 inch solid rib
Stock:
Gauge: 44 Mag
Finish: stainless steel
Grips: Goncalo Alves

I am going to grab it!

Too bad it has the "power port" though.

Other than that, I really like it, even though it serves no purpose that I have.

This revolver needs to be lettered.

Better quality close up photos of the gun would really be nice.

Is the shroud marked x of 25?

Looks like you got the very last one made. Very nice score, I still really like despite the hole. A rather scarce variation you could say. What's up with the serial number on the underneath of the top strap? Never seen that before.

Hey, if you like to tote around an N frame, I would find a nice holster and load it up with some 44spls. Looks like tons of fun to shoot.

I have one of the non-engraved models. The link below will take you to a discussion of this gun.

Other than the one I bought I have only seen three others sold. Two were sold by Handejector for SmithNut on the big on line gun sales website and one, more recently, by another seller. One of the first two sold for $3975. The other, in better condition sold for $5300 (if my memory is correct). The more recent sale was in the $3500 range. (I could no longer find the completed sale and my memory is not what it was.)

The letter in the attached link gives Lew Horton's description of the 495 guns. There is no mention of engraved guns in the letter.

I would assume that you found and bought a very valuable gun given the prices paid for non-engraved guns and yours being one of 25.

I qualified with mine and carried it for a while. Then I decided that it was too valuable to risk having it seized and kept for evidence in the event I had to use it. I put it up and bought one of the 629-6 Camfour guns, which is a fixed sight, 2.5 inch gun.
