Picked this up for $650. The thing is immaculate. Unshot before today (I took it for a spin). I was told it was made in 1984. For the price, I think I stole it lol

Beats the one I bought five years ago sans wood grips and box for $600. But I did get a .44 Rem Mag for my 44th B-Day.

So what do these go for??? I could find many for sale. I did find one just like it (a -1 and writhing same serial range) for $1600. That seems high though

$1600 is way high. I have bought 4 629-1 all of them for less than $700. The OPs deal, was pretty good, the gun being a 6" unfired with the box, plus wood stocks. I think most of the 629s have Goodyears. All but, one of those I bought had something that made them a bit less desirable. 2 had 8 3/8 barrels, and 1 of those was tapped for a scope, as was the 6" I just got, but the 6" came with a scope and mount which I will probably sell. The 629-1 are also not as desirable as some later models as it did not have the endurance package. I wanted one for a shooter, I would not pay much over $700 for a nice one, but then as I said I have some and one is still original with a 6" barrel.

At the last gun show here in South Florida there was a 629-1 boxed with papers etc for $1,000 asking (before negotiation). I passed on it because, as was said earlier, for a shooter I would want one with the endurance package and for a collectable, I would want and would pay more for a 629 no dash pinned and recessed version.

I'm probably not going to shoot this too much. Will feed it .44 special more than magnum though to be safe

Oh uh, noticed something I overlooked. Extractor rod has no tension, so I took everything apart and only one spring is there. Can't believe I missed that. Gun hasnt been taken apart, before, so must've been a Friday afternoon at the plant

It's deals like these on older models that make me unable to imagine why anyone would want to buy a new production. I just don't see the advantage. To each their own though, more new production for them and more vintage me.

I see you updated with a problem. You state the gun was never disassembled before. I would like to point out that you have no way of confirming that and would be foolish to believe it. Never assume, because unless you bought the gun brand new at retail, you will never know how it lived prior to your ownership.

Yeah true, either way it's mint as hell. I'm just going to find/order that small spring and all will be well.

Found the culprit! MIssing rod collar. Took one off my mixed parts 19-3 and the 629 is in business

Nice grab those are hard to come across. Least out here in AZ they are. I'd take that one to the grave with me

Private sale in the phx valley IF one comes around it'll be between 1000 and 1200 bucks. Now I'm sure one of the hard core collectors will come along soon and kick me square in the keister with a higher collectors value but that what they go for on the street out here.

Nice score! Don't let anyone tell you the 629-1 is somehow sub-standard. Yes there are better models and there are more expensive models but it's still a very fine revolver. The later models with the Endurance package won't stand up to the same kind of beating a Ruger will but I still prefer a S&W because of the accuracy and the looks. I've shot quite a few full load .44 magnum rounds through my 629-2 and it doesn't have any indication of a problem. I've probably put 250 rounds through it and not one was a .44 special. I tend to see that as taking the fun out of it. But that's me. I wouldn't shoot any of the real heavy rounds through it or any other 629 for that matter.

AR's are a dime a dozen now and easily replaced-nice older S&W's are not.

I highly doubt the pistol will see more than 150 round through it. I bought it because I need more variety in pistols. 11 semi-autos and only 2 revolvers

Just curious, but who rates them as "sub-standard"? I know that the -1 is prior to the performance package, but are any they less durable than the P&R model 29? If so, why? Is the stainless somehow less durable than blued carbon steel?

Not as pretty. The 629-1 is going at a lot more reasonable price right now, so buy another. Stainless will hold up well in hot, humid weather conditions with rain when carrying. Fine guns.

Older guys like the P&R guns because that's how well they used to be made. The -1 isn't giving anything but that up. If most people prefer the no dash and dash fours, that leaves more at better prices for the rest of us.

Same in the Reno area.

During the past 10 months a lot more of the 1995 and prior S&W revolvers with hammer mounted firing pins have appeared for sale at gun shows and local gun trader sites.

The 3" 1996 and prior with the hammer mounted pins still are commanding the highest asking prices and I don't imagine that will change.

Asking prices have also dropped with the increased amount available and fewer people actually buying older revolvers.

Polymer semi-autos are still the top sellers.

There was a 3" LNIB 60-1 Target,Ashland exclusive 1985 with 660 made,that I'm negotiating for.

At the last 3 shows I have attended there were more Colt snake guns on the tables than one would imagine with the current off the wall asking prices.At a smaller show this past Saturday I estimate there were between 50 and 75 Pythons for sale.A refinished 3" had a $3000 tag on it.Back when they were being made many gun buyers/shooters considered them the Edsel of guns.

Some believe the models before the Endurance package just aren't durable enough to shoot a lot. I disagree. If you stay away from heavy loads you should be good to go for a lot of rounds. All guns wear out of course. Again mine probably has 250 rounds through it and I consider that a low round count. My dad thought 6 rounds through his S&W's was a lot. He never shot any of them but he had a bunch of them just in case. He had faith in them. But he didn't want to take the chance something could go wrong before he really needed one of them. I like to test stuff before I put faith in it.

It's mainly that a lot of people want the -4 models or later and shy away from the earlier models unless they buy one to collect and they usually want a no dash for that. Me I'm happy with my -2. It's ready should my friendly neighborhood bears decide to become unfriendly. I carry it on my farm which has a lot of bears hanging around. There was a bear wallow not more than 75 yards from the graveyard I used to keep mowed before I moved out of the area. I'm moving back after the first of the month though and you can bet I'll have that 629 hanging on my shoulder when I go to the farm. I've seen my share of black bears threatening me (over half a dozen or so). I'd just as soon be ready just in case. I have complete faith that the -2 will do it's job if I do mine. Would I rather have a -4? Yes I would but I bought my -2 for $450. I don't think I'll find a -4 anywhere near that price.

I have a 629-1 8+ brl that I have owned since 80s .It has been well shot carried in the field and has taken a few deer some hogs ,coyote and numerous other critters .I don't use the heaviest loads as I just don't see the need personaly .Your 629-1 is beuatiful and yes you stole it for 650 that wouldn't touch mine and it is well used and shows it but I love that gun and you will love yours .Mine is so smooth and accurate it is truly a joy to hunt with and it is my comparison gun as far as trigger pull action ect goes.i have run any many rounds thru mine and still do it is just as tight as the day I bought it in like new condition about 1986 .Like I said I don't see the need for those super heavy loads I mean it's a 44 mag and it will take anything on this continent .Anyway I hope you enjoy mgreat score on a great gun.

Do you live in Idaho? I think I had that in my hand before you bought it. I thought the price was $640 plus tax. I bought two S&W model 41 pistols at the same estate sale that I saw this (or one just like it) at. One had never been fired and the other had been, but not much.

Now I'm thinking of selling it. Still haven't shot it, but really want an AUG A3. I'd use the AUG way more I think and I think I can get a decent amount for the 629. I'm juggling the option a lot lol
