Default Plz tell me about your BBQ guns

I've seen pictures of some beautiful pistols and holsters. Pardon me (or pray for me) I'm from NY/NJ. I'd never imagine open carry for dress up at a cook out. Is this the way it goes? Or is that just a term?
Please feel free to show off your best.

Default I DON'T GET IT EITHER.

My guns are for MY pleasure, not for showing off or trying to impress someone else. Not to say we didn't always bring along a few for show and tell before EVERY dove hunt. Whatever floats your boat, but if there's much alcohol consumption going on (which has been known to happen at the BBQ's I've been to) I'd kinda prefer them unloaded. I have yet to see the need for anything being shot at a BBQ & I've had some pretty rare beef.

Don't know if the term started in Texas but I have heard
it all my life. Lesser term of "Parade gun" was used from
time to time.
BBQ guns were normally engraved to some extent wearing ivory
or pearl.

Early Texas Rangers would have reunions (BBQ's) and sometimes wear
their fancy guns that many times were gifted by local citizen
etc....

There is a whole BBQ gun thread around here somewhere....

The Ultimate BBQ gun & leather thread

This one is an early Triple Lock in 44 Special with one of Kieth44spl's fancy holsters.

I would agree, mostly a term for a fancied up rig, but not everywhere! (I'm thinking a large south-central state...)
At certain BBQ's, with a certain group of friends, I can see wearing this:

Had to open this thread again considering the weather. If it's nasty winter weather where you are then you can imagine the coming spring and summer... BBQ! For those in warmer climes, who can BBQ almost 365... time to fire up the grill and grab your finest hardware!
For AZ BBQ '18 I am taking this:

I think I can smell the Mesquite smoke.

Well, I've never been invited to a BBQ where open carry was the norm. I think Xfuzz had a very good description of the origins of the term.

However, the topic does remind me of a time several years ago when my BMW motorcycle club was having a camp-out in the wilds of SW New Mexico. Someone asked what kind of gun they carried while on a ride. Before you knew it there were 20+ firearms laying on the top of a picnic table. Thankfully there were no discharges, accidental or otherwise.

I'm pretty partial to this pinto. . .

They are cast brass. I bought these in '98 @ SHOT Show from the manufacturer. They are marked inside the casting: "1997 SADDLEWORTH". They also had versions in solid silver too, and for other S&Ws.

I tried searching for the company online w/o any luck.

Still need a tooled holster though!

Sadly, I lack the necessary upbringing to own a BBQ Gun. I don't have the money to afford such a luxury item, much less the social connections get invited to a BBQ in which such a fancy firearm would be appropriate.
Furthermore, even if I did have that kind of money/social connections, I wouldn't be able to buy a fancy firearm only to carry it around at social events, the temptation to take it out to the range would just be too strong and I'd ultimately end up wearing away the finish.

However, I would very much like to have the money to afford such firearms and the connections to get invited to fancy BBQs.

It's SS. It DOES get shot. The holster just shines it up a bit.

A month or so ago I was bidding on a pair of engraved sterling silver sq butt K frame grips made in Mexico but had to let them go after they exceeded my top bid of $400

NOW I'm inspired. There may be a "BBQ gun" event in Northern Colorado next Spring/Summer.
I won't win "best of show", but I'll certainly be there for the fun.
And all y'all from NOTB are welcome, no problemo.

I've been part of the before hunt thing. I'm usually low key and feel for myself bragging or showing off brings bad luck but I love to see any friends new guns, shooter or show piece. If you ask me, I'll show mine BEFORE any drinking starts. I'm not LEO so open carry to me is brandishing

Brandishing is showing a weapon in a threatening fashion. Not even close to being the same as open carry.

If you brought that to a BBQ and showed it off I guarantee you would be doing the Mexican hat dance.

IMHO, IF YOU ARE GOING TO CARRY A WEAPON, IT NEEDS TO BE LOADED. YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TARGET, OF AN ARMED INTRUDER, WHO WILL RECOGNIZE YOU AS A MAJOR THREAT, TO BE NEUTRALIZED.....

MOST JURISDICTIONS HAVE LAWS AGAINST THE POSSESSION OF WEAPONS, WHILE CONSUMING ALCOHOL, FOR GOOD REASON. IF YOU PLAN TO CONSUME ALCOHOL, I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU REFRAIN FROM DRIVING, OR CARRYING A WEAPON......

My BBq gun is my shooters grade 29-5 classic in a Hunter 4500, just in case the wafting smell of the marinated ribs draws in a bear or drug crazed panhandler

I enjoy the various takes on BBQ guns from around the country.

I look at it this way....
On a hot Summer day you slip out of your sport coat after Sunday services and no one even notices or looks twice at the gun on your hip. Not Momma an nem, not the kids, not the Preacher. You are drinking Sweet Tea just like everyone else.

If it doesn't play that way where you are?
Then you are probably NOT in the right place for displaying your BBQ gun.
Find yourself a place where people understand and accept that good people wear guns.

I mean if ya starting questioning things.....whats next?
Boots and Stetsons?

My BBQ gun is a 29-3 in nickel finish with Ahrends Retro Combat stocks. BBQ holster is a floral carved Threepersons (repro). Round these parts you look out of place if you DON'T have your grillin' gun on

They are also called “Parade guns”

In rural Texas counties, it’s still not uncommon to have an official Sheriffs Posse whose primary purpose is to ride in parades and sort of imitate old-time Western lawmen, usually with a flashy single action, either unloaded or blanks at most.

In the day, lawmen often took part in parades which were often followed by barbecues.

Today open carry of a fancy gun at a BBQ would likely only occur at a private gathering on private land among friends.
