Nickel Finishes
Nickel looks great but does it require "special" care keeping it nice? I've always heard of it "flaking", discoloring after shooting? Thoughts from you nickel gun owners please?

Just take care of it as you would a blue finish and it'll be fine.

I've got a nickel 27-2 I bought new in April 1974 and it still looks pretty decent. Especially for the amount of use it has had. Like Pisgah said, take care of it as you would a nice blue finish gun. One caveat is to not leave a cleaning compound containing ammonia on it for any great length of time, such as soaking a cylinder or parts in Hoppe's #9 overnight or some other foolishness of that nature. But I do still use Hoppe's for cleaning them occasionally, but I make sure it is removed from all surfaces before installing my grips back or putting the yoke and cylinder back in the frame.

No heavy abrasives to clean it - the black stuff that comes off with scrubbing is the plating.
No prolonged soaking in solvents. (S & W did not use the copper underlayer process for nickel plating so ammonia-containing solvents 'should' not pose a problem, but be wary keeping any cleaning solution on the surface for long periods of time, even with "safe for nickel finish guns". It may not remove but may discolor the finish).
Flaking is usually from a nick in the plating and moisture working its way underneath, bubbling up from the inside. No way to fix that short of a full refinish.
It scratches easily and this is more obvious than on a blued gun.

Avoid products that contain Ammonia. Hoppe's solvent contains Ammonia and may best be avoided. Some will disagree, if you use it quit or wipe off imediately after use. I like it, it's traditional and you don't have to worry about rust. I personally wouldn't worry scratches or dulling of the finish, just let her age naturally.

A good coat of Renaissance wax after cleaning also helps, or something similar.
