Default Cylinder Compatability 686+ and 586 L-Comp

Hello everyone.

This might be a really stupid question/idea. I have a 586 L-Comp and I just bought a 686+ Talo. I like the looks of a Pinto revolver. Could I swap these 2 cylinders? If I did, I'd probably send the 686+ cylinder to TK Custom to get machined for moon clips.

Would anything have to be done to make this swap functional or am I opening a huge can of worms. Obviously, I would want to be able to undo this in the future if I decided to part ways with one of them.

Never mind. I just read down some threads that confirm this is a bad idea.

I guess I will have to settle for Ying and Yang unless I want to drop some ridiculous coinage.

I figured after 30+ reads and no response that nobody wanted to tell be "bad idea."

I would have though there'd be no real problem with it, except that maybe cylinder gaps, end shake, etc. might not be right now that I think about it.

What did you find to tell you it was not going to work?

Or you can send your cylinder to H&M for black nitriding...

I think it's doable.

Try swapping the entire crane and cylinder. Check the fitting and timing. If all checks.. swapping crane would not be to hard. Might need to trim or shim one or the other.

It was the JFrame thread citing all the minor items that get hand fit with a revolver.

I think swapping out the whole crane and also the crlinder release latch would look awesome.

That is gorgeous. That'd take care of th 686+. However, it'd be sweet to have the 586 L-Comp and the 686+ side by side and have them be mirror images of each other.

Suggestion has been to swap out the crane and everything which sounds potentially viable.

For those hard core S&W smiths, what about the original question on swapping out the cylinders?

The Reality is you can try and fit it, but it may need fitting to work correctly, or it may work.
