Default Model 29 ruled the range

Took these guns to the range today. Began by shooing 10 rounds, with the High Standard 106, followed by the same amount down the pipe of a Springfield Range Officer, in .45; 2 cylinders of 5 (.357, 158 grain) each through a 6" 686-6. Finally, 10 .44 magnum rounds. I did this circuit twice. Then, a young man, who had been introducing his two friends to 9mm (Glock, M&P, and Springfield), came over, and asked what that big gun was. He had never fired a revolver before. I made him run 6 rounds through my 29-10. He could not believe the size of the round and found the recoil addicting. Such a huge grin! He thanked me profusely.

Then I shot another 2 circuits. Target-wise, I did fair. Shooting one-handed at 25 yards, I could keep em on the paper, but couldn't manage anything better than 6", once with the .22 and once with the 29-10. Before today, I had never shot the Dirty Harry gun, one-handed. It was manageable and my hand hurts less than it does after shooting 2-handed. It may not be a true classic (yet), but, after a lighter spring and 500 rounds, she's really breaking in nicely. Next, a trigger job for the 686-6 Plus.

Your group of guns looks very similar to groups I choose to bring to my indoor range! Same as you I usually start with the 22 to get warmed up then gradually move up in caliber size. Finishing the set with a cylinder or 2 of 44 specials then a cylinder or 2 of 44 mag out of my 29-3. Last time I went a fella was literally hooting and hollering after each 44 mag shot like he was watching a 4th of July fireworks show. Several people have also made the statement that "it looks like a gun show display"in front of me. What can I say I like to shoot for an hour or 2 and spread it out amongst the days grouping of 6 or 8 guns some times even a few 22 rifles.

I had been shooting competitive smallbore and air rifle as a kid since the 1970s. When I decided to shoot pistol (this was in Canada....gun laws, etc) I had to join a certified club. I went to observe a Bullseye match where they fired two National match courses (one with 22, one with centerfire). When they switched to the second course, this big Micmac Indian and his friend pulled out a M29 and M27 respectively. They had them loaded down a bit, but there was no mistaking them as shooting 38 wadcutters.
The second club I visited was similar. There were three guys that shot 44s for bullseye, one with a 29, one with a then brand new 629, and one with an old model Blackhawk.
Thanks to them, the first pistol I ever bought was a S&W 29. I still have it. It's had two rebuilds, but is still going strong. I have no plans to ever be without it.

To the OP:
You never know.... You may have changed the course of that young guy's life!

Kudos to you!

Jim

I recently saw a Youtube video, something like "10 things in the movies that are impossible." They showed a clip from Dirty Harry, and stated as an absolute fact that no one could accurately shoot a 44 magnum with one hand. You couldn't hold onto it. It would fly right out of your hand. If only I'd known.

Glad I never saw the video! I did get good adrenaline buzz, which made it hard to keep the sights on-target, until my heart slowed down a bit.

I do the same but after Shooting the 44mag, and getting everyone’s attention, I than finished with the 460 Magnum to clear the dust off the rafters at our clubs indoor range. I always have a few wander over to see what just happened and always offer them the chance to shoot something they might never shoot again. The grin is all the thanks I need.

Dang, I wish I had known that too.

All those years of Bullseye shooting wasted ...

Scientifically speaking, the bumblebee isn't supposed to be able to fly...but it doesn't know that it ain't supposed to.Guess I(and some others)didn't know that shooting the big 44 single hand can't be done.Think I'm gonna start trying to fly!

The day of my big shootout (competition - not shooting at each other of course) I was shooting my Sig P220. The people who laughed at me when I moved the 6" target out to 25 yards weren't laughing so much when they went to get the range master to try to show me up. Apparently they all expected him to beat me. He was shooting a 629 and doing just as well as I was doing. We matched shots for about half an hour until I ran out of ammo with my .45. I told him to hold on until I got another gun out of the truck. I pulled out my 629 and suddenly he decided it was "too dark" to shoot even though we had lights. He gave some excuse about how the club didn't want so much wasted electricity (yeah right - that club is so flush with cash they can't spend it fast enough - they have bought up all the land for a mile in every direction). Apparently he thought I would do much better with the 629 but the truth is I had just bought it and wasn't good with it yet. The crowd that had gathered to watch us let out a sizeable moan when he called it off. I let out a sigh of relief because I doubt I could have matched him with the 629 at that point. Later I could have once I had learned to shoot it better.

But still it goes to show what kind of respect those revolvers get. The guy with the best reputation shooting a handgun at the club was using one. Yeah I matched him with the Sig but that thing is a special shooter. He would have had a cow if I had pulled out my Taurus PT-145 and matched him which I could have done except it also shot .45's and I was out of target ammo for the day. I should have brought more from home I guess but I never expected to be shooting so long with the one gun.

I like to do it every now and then with a 3" 629 just to remind myself what it's like

This is COMPLETE bs. Total and unequivocally wrong. NOT trying to stretch my d—k out as being some sick shot or inspector Callahan wannabe, which I am not, I am average at best, but putting shots on paper or into melons or gallon jugs at 25 yards SINGLE HANDED with my 629-6 Classic is routine. Easy. And i’’m Good to shoot it like that for at least 6 cylinders full. Muzzle flip might be like 8” depending on how loose i’m Gripping. Ironicallly, some of my best shooting at this distance comes off the one-handed stance. And some of my best single shots at the 50 yard mark come this way also. Again, i’m no pro with the 29. I don’t like barrels shorter than 4 inches in a 357 either. But, DH wasn’t shooting those those one-handed either....

i picked up a new 629 last spring 4", my preferred revolver barrel length and took it to the range with my son for a break in the new gun session. been a long time away from revolvers but the gun made it easy for me to look and feel like id been shooting it for years if not decades, love it and the 44 cartridge, having a iconic sw 44 is a grail gun for me and it was amazing how well we got along. even had the range marshal come over to watch for a while. breaking clays set up on the ground at various ranges, destroyed 3 old hard drives "shot completely threw where 9mm shots only left dents, lol" even managed some hits on clays at 100 yards 2 in a row twice. now its made me wonder why i waited so long to get another 6 gun in 44, last one a super blackhawk circa 1980. never had the same rapport with that one i guess. cant wait to get out again. while at the range another guy was shooting his 686 ssr, one i had drooled over on occasion, we talked a bit then swapped guns for a cyl full each again, even with the new 629 i had to go for the ssr, had one a month later love it and now fast becoming a sw revolver addict. no idea weather he intended on getting a 44, though he did complain his hand was sore, so im guessing not a fan. i put 200 full factory rounds threw it that day, mostly da, loved it wished id brought more ammo. continuing sw revolver addiction i picked up a new 442 2 days ago, shot 50 at the range, im hooked on these 3 smiths all wheel guns, sold my fs 9mm walther to get the 442, im keeping my shield but think the 442 might push that to a secondary home defense gun status. been a great year for me and sw revolvers. was getting tired of plastic guns anyway

ps on the triggers, the 629 has had a trigger job, sweeeeeeet smooth pull just under 10. the 442 i was expecting to need smoothing up, pulls 11 but is about as smooth as the 629 is. not going to change a thing there, my 686ssr falls between the two but is getting better fast, now wears vz grips and they have a perfect feel"checkered", thinking of going vz on the other 2, thoughts?
