Default Head 'em up and move 'em out//Now with Range Report

Thanks to a very nice forum member I will soon be the owner of this 544. I know some don't like commeratives but hey a 5" N-frame in .44-40. What's not to like. I have some Fiocci ammo on the way, can't wait to mix the two.

Oh man this gun shot better than I hoped. Just took it out for quick shakedown cruise. Accurate, handled great and the trigger (especially SA) was exceptional. People may not care for the commemoratives but S&W sure did both in the finish and the mechanics.

Dang! It doesn't often happen that I see a gun that would make me pause and gawk in a gun store, and that would be one. Neat-o!

210 or 240 grain Fiocchi? I bet your Smith will like the 240 best!

A 5 inch N frame in 44-40....what's not to like.
I know it's a commemorative and should only be looked at...but if I had one, some new Starline brass would be ordered , the lead pot heated , bullets cast ....and after the reloading....range time !
I can't help it ...I'm just an unrepentant shooter !
And that would be a SWEET shooter. Nice score
Gary

Default S&W Model 544 44-40 Winchester caliber

Wow. I like it. Congratulations on a great
purchase. That is a neat S&W.

That would be cool to learn reloading the
44-40 Win and shooting. Please give us
a Range Report when you shoot it.

Hopefully one day I can find one for my
S&W Art collection.

Thank you for sharing and the nice picture.

Here is his brother in .45 Colt 25-3 125th Anniversary. A very fun gun to shoot. N-Frames, gotta love them.

I love 44-40. Always wanted a 44-40 handgun.
Save your brass. You may wish to reload that for sure.
The brass tends to be a little weak from the neck up but that`s a cartridge developed in 1873 for black powder.
I load 200 gr .429 diameter bullets for an 1892 rifle and it shoots great.
Great find. Im jealous.

glenncal1. I have one that I really like. It shoots like gangbusters and I'm looking for a second one[at an affordable price] for a project.
Skeeter cost me a fortune in 5" .357s 'cause I can't get them to shoot well for me but, not so with the .44-40 and .44 Mag. they're just right! Best of luck with yours. Nick

Smokey- a not bad shooter (included the case) went on GB last week for $655. It had some poor fitting non-S&W grips on it, would have been good for your project. I thought about the gun but figured by the time I got a proper set of grips I would have just about what I paid for my gun in it.

Neat Smith..
A buddy found one a couple years ago.
He simply replaced the side plate with the decoration
on it and you could not tell it was a commemorative.

Making good shooters are about the only thing relatively modern commemoratives are good for in my opinion.

Looks like you found a really fun one to enjoy. Congrats!

Looks great!!! I wonder if a 44 Mag cylinder could be fitted to it as well. Would make a great gun even better.

44-40 has a reputation of needing caution during the reloading process.
Have fun with it.
Bill@Yuma
What is the big caution in reloading for it??
