Replacing Factory Grips on PC 627-3
Hello: I need to replace the Factory grips on my Smith & Wesson Performance Center 627-3 Serial Number KST00XX.
The original ones were damaged, the attached picture is before they were damaged. Does anyone know if the grips offered by Hougue and Team Miculek are the same as the originals? Can anyone identify the species of wood the original grips are?
Thank you.

I believe they were hogues, but I am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

They are Hogues, and they may still be available without the initials. They were a couple of years ago when i needed the same stocks for the same model. Luckily a member offered an original set when i posted an ad on this site. Check ebay too.

Replacing Factory Grips on PC 627-3
Thank you, I posted an add here in the classified section. As for eBay I know they limited what one could list for firearms related products like brass casings, but you think they allow listing grips and the like?
Does anyone know the species of wood these are?
Thank you.

There are TONS of grips on eBay, but a lot of them are knock offs made overseas, so if you want originals, read carefully. Also watch Gun Broker.

How about a picture of the damaged grips? Being an optimist I have to believe they are repairable. Many of us have experience repairing grips (stocks) and one member of this forum (dwfan as I recall?) is a master at grip repair. Maybe we can offer advice for a simple repair you can accomplish?

The grips you pictured are Hogues as indicated by the mount - single screw through the bottom of the one-piece grip into a frame mounted stirrup. S&W later had those grips (at least the atrocious R, W & B ones) knocked-off but the knock-offs used the typical horizontal, mid-grip screw securing the two grip halves to the frame.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Here are some suggestions:
1. Call Smith at 1-800-331-0852 and tell them your woes. They may have some old stock grips in stock? If not, then the current grips (stocks) on the 625 models have about the same contour and shape as your damaged grips.
The Model 625 JM has about the same color and contour stocks but be aware that "JM" is etched into the lower portion of the right stock panel. SKU: 160936 for the 625 JM revolver which S&W will need to know if you decide to go this route.
The 625-8 has similar contour and shape stocks but they are a tri-color laminate (red, white, and blue).
You will not find the stocks for the 625 JM or the 625-8 listed at the Smith & Wesson website but talking with a customer rep will probably reveal you can purchase them by phone. I recently wanted grips I knew they made but weren't listed for sale and I was able to buy them.
2. Contact DWFAN. My guess is DWFAN, a member of this forum, could repair these stocks (grips).
In the upper right banner bar/tool bar of the Smith & Wesson Forum use the dropdown menu under Quick Links and choose Private Messages in the Miscellaneous section which opens up a page in which you can post a private message (PM). Choose the Send PM button which opens up another page and in the Recipients field type DWFAN and then fill in the other fields.
3. If you're handy with woodworking then (I hope DWFAN does not cringe at the below advice):
-find wood with matching grain that matches the wood of your current grips.
-strip the finish on both grip panel by soaking in acetone overnight and then scrubbing with tooth brush
-router out the least amount of wood in the defective area to give you relatively straight edges to work with
-cut the matching wood to fit into the defect in the stock (make it a little bigger than the defect) and glue it in place with clamps.
-after the glue dries overnight then sand down until smooth.
-apply 3-5 coats of Minwax Tung Oil.

I reviewed your photos again and the repair might be much easier than I gave for option #3 in my previous post?
It looks like all the wood you might need might be present? It looks like with some care and maybe an Xacto knife you might be able to salvage the wood that adhered to one of the grip panels to fit into the defect in the other. If I was doing this I would suggest stripping the finish first by soaking overnight in acetone and scrubbing off with acetone.
If the wood chunk fit into the defect nearly perfectly I would just glue it and clamp it but if it did not fit perfectly or nearly perfectly:
Next, over a piece of paper, I would sand the surface of the grips and catch the wood dust on the paper and then when I was ready to glue the piece of wood back into the defect I would mix the wood dust with the wood glue and clamp.
After drying sand the area where the chunk was glued back into the grip.
Best of luck.

Grip Repair
Hello:
I gave the grips to a local custom grip maker, he is pretty confident that he can repair, glue them back together and refinish them with next to no trace.
If not I will be looking at the Hougues in the links below.
Thank you

though I am not here that often, I am today. Yes, these are Hogue Grips.
Made for S&W using Pau Ferro wood. Yes they are still available from Hogue Or Jerry Miculek. Only difference is they have JM logo (#25314)
or checkered still with JM logo (25315)
If interested give our C/S a call and they will set you up.

Hello Ken:
Looking at the pictures on the website the grips appear to be larger at the bottom, kind of flared out, is that accurate or is it just an illusion? another question,
Will Hogue make the 40070 magazine base plate again?
Thank you

Walnut colored rifle barrel bedding compound , like Brownells Acraglas, is great for repairing what seems like damaged beyond repair wood grips....used it many times with great success .

Repair
Hello
The grips are at a local custom grip maker, he says he has repaired them but I have not had a chance to pick them up yet. I will post pictures when I get them in my possession.
Thank you.
