My friend and I each purchased one of these SOG model 64's about a month ago. At the time they had several different engineering changes. We requested 64-5's. In our experience that meant adding $10.00 for hand select. In summary, we were both pleased with what we received. They were shipped the day we placed the orders to our FFL. Now as to the revolvers. Mechanically they have good timing, lock up tight and have no end shake. Triggers are typical Smith & Wesson excellent. Very faint drag rings and good rifling. Both appear to be as shipped from S&W with new style ejectors and Uncle Mike's grips.
Cosmetics were a different issue. As it turned out, we received a square butt and a round butt. Sight unseen, I said I would take the round butt. Well the square butt was very clean, hardly a nick on it. The FFL was very impressed. The round butt was another story. More scratches and dings than I could count, all shallow but it was obvious the Ol' 64 was carried hard and not much cared for. As my FFL said, "I carried one of those for 20 years and it didn't look that bad". Well, as I said it was purely cosmetic. Nothing a little 600 grit and 1200 grit sandpaper couldn't remove. (The beauty of stainless steel guns.) I've attached some pictures of my 64-5 after cleanup and a little Mothers Mag Polish. (Sorry for the size of the pics.)
We took them to the range and both shot to point of aim.We agreed that the more pristine square butt had a slightly better single action trigger but the Ol' 64-5 round butt had a smoother double action, probably because it had been shot a lot more. Ironically the best group of the day was by my friend using my Ol' 64-5 round butt
