66-2 help please
I purchased this about a week ago and I'm hoping for a little insight. Ser.# ANS1022 with a 4" barrel and round butt. Originally ordered by the Ok. Dept. of Corrections, Pardon & Parole div. I've had people tell me that S&W didn't make a round butt 4", but p&p division usually wore their sidearms concealed, so could this be a special order? I believe this to have been made in the early 80s? 20171030_213944.jpg

I realize someone hasdone a lot of work on it and is far from original but they did an amazing job on it inside and out.

Take the grips of and post a picture of the s/n on the bottom of the grip frame. From that, the way it looks, it can be determined if it was a square butt converted to a round butt.

The frame has not been converted, the backstrap grooves run the full length of the frame.

Your revolver made me curious so I had to look in my database.
I was a little surprised to see that even in 1986 S&W was still making frames in batches.
All models 19 or 66 I have seen in the AJx range are square butt, 4" or 6".
Everything in the ALx and ANx range (no 19 or 66 with AMx) are round butt, 2.5" with a few 3" thrown in.
Nothing again until AUx and they're all square butt again. In 1987 starting with AVx they are mixed SB and RB.
Since your revolver is 1986+ there's a good chance S&W CS still has it in their database so I gave them a call and although not definite, they had some interesting info on it.
Your 66 shipped on 9/13/1991 which is awfully late for an ANS prefix.
It also has a product code of 102701 which is not a standard product code (2.5" are 102702 & 102703, 4" are 102705 & 102706, etc.).
Unfortunately it's still over 25 years old so they weren't 'able' to tell me anything more, like barrel length, but that wasn't a plain old standard M66 when it left S&W.

Strange finish.....................
I think Smith would make anything you wanted if the order was big enough..... they did/do cater to the Law Enforcement market
IIRC................They made 4" round butt 19s (?) for NCIS in the 70s or 80s

Thank you snw19_357 for the insight. It's a lot more information than I could find. It also helps to explain the other set of grips that came with it, a rubber set of "Hogues" with the S&W logo on them.
