Default N frame rb Spegel grip???

I came across a set of Spegel N frame rb grips. I believe that these are cocobolo by looking at some others, but am not sure. They are pictured on a 625. Thoughts? Thanks in advance...

They could be Spegel but, the fit is not up to his standards. They do look like cocobolo.

I have a set of cocobolo Spegel boot grips. Those look like cocobolo to me, though a lighter shade than mine (I do believe mine have darkened over time and use).

I pulled out my 640 to take a look and to me the wood looks to be the same as I have, which is the Cocobola.

The grips look to me to be Spegal's but the fit does look to be a little loose around the front grip area. Not sure if you have them lined up just right or if you bought them used if someone hadn't had them mounted on their specific revolver in a custom fit when they were made.

The pair I purchased, used, did not fit real tight on my 442 but fit my 640 like a charm and look wonderful.

He's been signing and/or stamping his grips for about the last 10 years or so.

?? is the pin at the bottom of the grip frame centered????

Those are Spegel.
They show his signature "blind grip screw plug".
They should be signed inside.

Can't comment on the wood.

As for the fit- Craig crafts his grips to one consistent set of internal dimensions, while S&W does not necessarily machine each & every gripframe to the same consistent dimensions.

You might try calling & discussing with him.
The internal inletting can be adjusted, either by him or by a competent local gunsmith who's good enough to fit the wood to your gun.

I've bought several grip sets from him, never run into your problem before.

I'd call those coco, tho I've seen that cast called rosewood as well (broad family). Hesitant to say this but there's a couple reasons why I'd question they are Spegels, course you hadn't asked that in your post and I may be dead wrong. But I do see a couple things (besides what would appear to be an unusually sloppy fit) that look a bit off, tho camera angle I suppose could be responsible for my reluctance.

Have some loose Spegels handy, all but the upper left were custom-fitted to specific Smiths a few years ago (upper left generic). I'm a lefty so both sides are scalloped so am only showing the left ones, been doing some tung oiling:

---The horns on mine are all much "pointier" than yours, I angle them in my hand to match your photo angle and they still look that way. But mine are all J/K and yours are N, perhaps just more breadth on yours.

---As the front of the stocks sweeps down toward the base mine all start angling forward, yours would seem to drop pretty-much straight down.

---My screw holes are all drilled noticeably higher relative to the finger cutout than yours, however as again mine are J/K and yours N that may be the explanation. Yours are tho plugged on one side as mentioned above, that's certainly Spegelish... hmmm....

---Lastly, the protrusion between the cutouts on yours is pretty rounded, mine are all much sharper.

Craig's been doing this for a LONG time-- I wonder if yours aren't maybe one of his early sets? Talked to a guy working in a gun shop here in Portland (Craig lives in OR as well) who remembers Craig stopping by once in a while, peddling his wares 3/4 sets at a time. Before he had a web sight.

Perhaps that would explain everything-- please let us know if anything's stamped or printed underneath.

Those grips could also have been previously fit to a specific gripframe that differed slightly from yours.

In the 686 project I just got finished, I had a square-butt altered to a round-butt & had my gunsmith custom fit a set of Craig's Cocos to the gun.

I'd expect the grips to fit many round-butt Smiths, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did not fit many others precisely.

Call Craig & discuss.
He likes to keep customers happy & should be willing to work with you.

Thanks for the replies guys! I got them with a gun, but not sure if they were originally for the one I purchased. They are signed...
Any idea as to a value for them??

Default grips

He is behind on orders so, I think they will bring more than his retail. I would say $125. or so.

FWIW, that's about what I paid about 6-1/2 years ago, back when Novak's had them in stock, and the set I got wasn't even the most expensive model. IIRC, they sold out of them really quickly.

I think Spegels are about the best revolver grips out there, but if, for whatever reason, you don't want them and decide to sell them, I don't think you'll have any trouble finding a buyer.

Ya I'd say $150/$175 EZ, 'specially since they're coco. EZ to refinish, make 'em brand new.

Cocobolo would definitely be a strong selling point. If I'm not mistaken, it's no longer allowed to be imported into the US.

While many of us here seem to agree that you have cocobolo grips, it might be worth sending an e-mail with pics to Craig Spegel and get it confirmed from him before you label it as such in a sales ad, just to be prudent. Assuming you plan on selling them, that is.
