Slab sided barrels!
Anybody like the slab sided barrel look. I didn't realize S&W made so many over the years and that I had them in my safe! Let's see any other models you might have!

I never could warm to that look. Something about the angled/tapered ejector shroud just doesn't look right to me. Guess I'm just more into the "classic" look. But to each his own.

I don't own one (yet) but I like them. Especially that 646 & the 38 super (model # I don't know) that you have.

I don't mind the slab side, but am not a fan of the angled bottom of the barrel on most of them. But it is only aesthetics, so I don't let it bother me.

No offense to the opinion of anyone else on this topic, but for my purposes, the slab-sided S&W barrel is an abomination. That leaves more available for those who like the look. To my eyes, the slab-sided barrels do not match the graceful appearance of the lunette, and the look is, of course, non-traditional. I, for one, appreciate tradition.
Also, my suspicious mind tells me that machining a slab-sided barrel is easier and takes less machine time. I do not know that for sure, but I suspect it, and by my way of thinking, that cheapens the revolver and its appearance.
If, for example, Colt re-introduced the Python with all of the hand-fitting and attention to detail as it was at its pinnacle, but they made the barrel slab-sided, but otherwise still with a ventilated rib as before, would any of you Python people like that? Well, I don't like it with S&W either. If anything, the supposedly more careful attention to detail of a Performance Center gun calls for a traditional appearance.
Just my two cents. If I wanted a Chiappa, I would buy one of those.

I have a 686SSR and I like the look of the barrel the ejector shroud I can take or leave. What really sold me though was how much lighter in the hand the revolver feels versus the round full shroud version which I also have. I carry mine all the time mainly due to the lighter weight and that it shoots so good.

I like the look of both the traditional and the slab side. I've done the slab side to several Rugers as a way to eliminate the ugly rollmarks (laser etchings now) and change chambering markings. The slab side look is definitely edgier and more contemporary. Hats off to S&W for offering both traditional styling, the "classics" and the bold slab side designs. Viva la difference!

I like the slabbed & slanted look. Especially, the 6 & 4-inch guns. I've heard it lightens the gun significantly, compared to the plain profile full lug. Ideal for a 6-inch M617 (pc 170122) which otherwise can be a real pig.

Very nice grouping !
I would agree that the slabsides can be an acquired taste, one that I now appreciate.

Glad you like them. I prefer the heavy round barrels with the traditional length ejector shroud myself.

Count me in
I like the look. I think it gives ejector shroud some character. And, as mentioned above, they are lighter and point better to me. Don't get me wrong, I still love the look of the non-slab sided barrels too. Here is my SSR. I also own a PC327 TRR8, but don't have any decent pics yet.

I... I... ah... yes! I'll admit it! If and when I find one that floats my boat, I'll probably buy it! Specifically I'll be looking for something w/ a five inch barrel. Local matches at the police department limit barrel length to five inches... which of course just happens to be the length of a 1911 barrel. But that leaves me and my six inch 686 out in the cold. So, I'll be looking for a five inch... 686 of some sort... maybe w/ moonclip loading. That'll give the boys at the PD something to think about! Sincerely. bruce.

Since you asked, no, I detest them. I've passed up buying a lot of S&W's because they lack traditional barrels.
I look at the Performance Center guns and everything is a turn off. Pity.
Slab sided barrels = no sale.

Well I don't particually care for the angled bottom. The slab side is fine.
Irregardless, I HAD to have an 8-shot .357 N-frame & if you want new, there isn't much choice.
From behind the trigger, they all look the same anyway.
.
jcelect: What's the model number of your 40 S&W? I like the "less" angled bottom on it.

What he said.....
I like innovation and new aesthetics. I have many old traditional style revolvers and many new style. Love them all!
If revolvers are to survive by appealing to a broad base of people new style changes that don't cause the slightest performance impact are a must.
Keep up the innovation and new design concepts for new generations to come, S&W!! I'll be buying them as long as I'm still standing...

Hey guys, it's obvious isn't it.
They went to the slab sided barrel so when you lay the gun on the bench, it won't roll off.

I kind of like them on the older gun frames....... something about the new frame.....just "looks wrong" to me.............
Can see where they could cut some weight on on carry gun...
and makes great sense when a "custom gun is re-calibered" so it can be properly marked.

Generally like it on snubbies like the 627, generally don't like it on regular length barrels, although the 5" barreled 627 by the S&W Performance Center would be an exception as S&W worked out the tapered lug nicely.
Then you have the 629 6.5" barrel from the perf ctr with a slab tapered lug (SKU 170181) and a round barrel, and that works.

I FAR prefer the lighter slab sided barrels to the FULL underlug barrels such as the current 617's. I have never understood WHY anyone would want such a heavy barrel on a .22 revolver? I think the lighter, slab side barrels would balance nicer and be lighter on the 617 series.
The Factory DID make such a revolver in 6" and they were exported to WISCHA (SP? sorry) in Germany. A few have been reimported back to the US. My good friend "Inspector Callahan " just went through the expense and paperwork nightmare to bring one back to the US.
Or simply bring back the original barrel contours on the K-22 and make the 617 a REAL K-22 not sporting the silly full underlug.
I have a 5" 627 with the lighter slab sided barrel...it balances and feels about perfect.
Also have the Light Weight Hunter Tri-Fecta with the .41, .44 mag and .45 Colt models, all 6". They are a bit too heavy, but I can live with them.
Some of the slab sided barrel contours are TOO heavy. The 7 1/2" model they did , the Birdsong 629 model in OD Green immediately comes to mind.

I do like slabside look, something of a change from the standard configuration. Have several of both types and enjoy them equally.

The factory also made some for Ashland Shooters Supply, Ashland, Ohio in 1991. They were 4"(product code 100563) and 6" barrel lengths!

They are One Piece Hogue Finger Grooves, made from Gonçalo Alves. I really like them! I obviously love Combats more, but these do the trick

I'm not a big fan of them on the longer barrels but on snubs I think it looks pretty good! I'd love to own one of those 627's.

I like them too. I also like the traditional look. To paraphrase a long-known Marine dictum. "Old Smith and Wesson, New Smith and Wesson, Doesn't matter as long as it's Smith and Wesson..."
I love my 627-5 that I've worked on. She's my nightstand gun.

I'm getting to the point where I'm not caring what they look like... just get them on straight.
I like some of the slab sides... especially the ones that remind me of the custom PPC's guns of the 70's that I lusted after in my youth.

I like both traditional and the slab sided look. The only slab sided S&W I currently have is a 686 SSR. Great revolver too.

My 629 Mag Hunter Plus looks good, as does my 629 2 5/8" PC gun; indifferent to the 627 profile. I felt stainless guns shouldn't have to conform to the conventional profile, just because stainless is the newer modern material.
I think it's good to have an alternative modern designed gun available to those looking for something new....

.357 686+ seven shot 5" barrel
This is my first L frame revolver. I really like the balance with the 5" slab barrel because it's not too nose heavy. It came with rubber Hogue grips with fingergroves but I never really liked them so I replace them with the Rosewood grips. I also replaced the front Patridge sight with a fiber optic one. I like traditional barrels but the non-traditional look is ok with me too (obviously). Regards, Elliot45

I love my 627-5 that I've worked on. She's my nightstand gun.

I could get used to this right here in a heartbeat! ! I wouldn't mind a few others that I've seen either. So yeah, I guess I like em.
