I scored a Model 29-5 and a Model 17-4 from an old guy getting out of shooting and just had a question.
Did S&W sell these with stock Hogue Monogrips right from the factory at any point or are they an aftermarket add on?
I have a guy interested in buying them trying to tell me to knock $300 off the price of each because I don't have the original grips.
The M29 probably did have Hogues from the factory. Those were common in its era. The M17-4 was made a good five years before S&W issued them with the now pricey finger groove Combat Stocks. My recollection is the -4's normally shipped with wood Magna Stocks, which aren't nearly as pricey as Combats, but can still fetch something near $100 in excellent condition.
I believe that the Hogues fitted to S&Ws from the factory had the S&W logo on them and not the Hogue logo as in your pictures. I suspect that the buyer is correct about about those not being original, however I do not agree that not having the original stocks/grips warrants a $300 discount per revolver. I might take up to $100 off but unless you bought them just to quickly resell, I would hold out for another buyer who would be willing to pay closer to your asking price.
Myself, I would keep both of them.
