The beast 629-5
A true Big Bore Belly gun, the grips are really good for shooting hot .44 mag loads.. . though most of my shooting is with 44 Specials. This one is often a night stand gun.

I believe this one is a Camfour gun and is actually a 2.5 inch barrel. They did a "-5" and a "-6" run. I have a "-6." Its a great cold weather carry gun. I will qualify with mine on Thursday. I only shoot .44 Specials and its great. Its a bit snappy with magnums.

Nice short .44’s gentlemen!
WCCPD, I like your choice of grips! The Altamont service grips work really well for me for my 4” 629-5, they also help trim the gun down when I CC it during the cooler months.

I have a fondness for 3" S&W revolvers these days and replacing a few 4" and 2 1/2" with 3" versions.
I'd turn a blind eye at the MIM and snatch one of those fixed sight 629-5 if ever to appear for sale in front of me.I might even consider paying a tad bit over what I bought the Backpacker for even though I prefer adjustable sights these days.
I have an excellent condition fixed sight 3" 13-2 that's proving to be better than expected at the range.
Now where's an elusive 3" 686 pre MIM shooter I can replace my 2 1/2" 686-4 with?

Yet another Camfour Distributors 629-5 2.5" barrel fixed sight .44 mag.
Only 300 of these pre-lock guns were made. I've had this one 14 years now.
This is the S&W that brought me to this forum in 2003. I was trying to figure the details on this revolver and stumbled into this forum. Been here since.
These came NIB with the Hogue rubber grips as shown in post #1 by Muddyboot
Sebago Son might be along soon telling us about the two he has!

I had a 3 inch 629 when I was in my 20's. Back then I thought winchester 296 was the only powder made and the only bullet was a xtp 300gr hp. I'm glad I've got a tiny bit smarter but I really want another short 629

Passed on one from another forum member, a few years back. Really nice piece, but (in my infinite wisdom) thought the $800.00 asking price was too steep. Been kicking myself - & looking for another one, ever since.
Pretty funny, huh?

Your correct about this being one of the Camfour revolvers, this one is #037, as stamped on the crane.

The letter arrived for this one, Shipped Nov 19, 1999 to Camfour Inc.,
Westfield, Ma in an 164 unit shipment. The letter stated it was equipped with a 2.5" barrel, fixed sight, satin finish, and rubber combat grips. Also mentions the 164 units were in the serial range of CDT5030-CDT5193.

Product code for these uncommon fixed sight Model 629-5's was 103839.
I've seen three that were still with their factory boxes. All three had a November 15, 1999 ship date, and the s/n's were in the same range mentioned in your factory letter.
Another source I saw said 300 were made. If that's accurate, perhaps there was another shipment. Not many stainless N-frames with a fixed sight top strap. Very unusual.

If the number isn't 300, I wonder what total production was?

Perhaps the 164 number mentioned in the factory letter. Though, notice Jinks doesn't call that number the total ever made. He just refers to it as the number in that certain shipment for that certain order.

Unlucky 13
But of course Kernel. Yes those are assembly numbers and S&W’s have them. The assembly number on mine is obviously 013.
Maybe mine is the unlucky one and was assembled on a Friday.

C&L... I hate you! Congrats though... Congrats on having what I consider probably the most desirable revolver I've ever seen on this forum. My 3" current production 629 is my favorite revo I own and I've become a .44Special/Magnum addict! The recoil impulse of the Magnum is nothing like I was told and is simply a hard push into the palm as oppose to a nasty muzzle flip, of which I disdain abhorrently! Thanks again for posting pics of that beautiful revolver... as they can be "almost" as sexy as a beautiful woman is... Almost!
