Default how I stopped worrying and learned to love my 642-1

I never liked to putting my blued taurus .327 fed mag snubbie in my front pocket.
So hot weather carry was tough but not impossible.
Usually light button up shirt to cover my holster and gun.

Early this summer I decided to find a pocket gun, so money got squirreled away, research on derangers and other pocket guns... done.
I never looked at the 642 out of hand cause I thought it would be cost prohibitive.
I found one for a good price and I knew it needed me as much as I needed it. In short it was beat "finish wise ", but the bore and cylinder is great dirty but great
I got a thing for an underdog and I like to tinker
So I took it home started to clean it and the finish was flaking off in my hands so I removed the paint ? or whatever they use on these guns, started polishing , and polishing , and more polishing some dry lube protectant and good to go temporarily
Now it is good and shiny, when I am done I will give it a past wax coat, throw in my front pocket and forget about it (for the most part ) and go about my day
so no more worries

I found a very cosmetically challenged 642 in an LGS and made a very good deal to buy it. The LGS was glad to find some one who would buy this revolver. It truly does look like it's been carried in a tackle box or tool box along with other loose tools for a long time, and that box was riding in the back of a pickup truck travelling down very rough roads. It always makes me smile when I see and hold and carry it. It has been absolutely reliable mechanically and I am thrilled to have it, in spite of it's looks. I think you bought a great gun, Sir!

I got my no-lock a few years ago (new) and it sits in my front pocket in a DeSantis pocket holster. With its rounded shape, it just seems to blend in better than any square-shaped semi. JMO, YMMV.

Nice work. When I was still on the road my 340PD rode in the drivers door side pocket in a holster that was velcroed to keep it in the correct position. It is nice to have a gun that resists the elements and can travel in the pocket or sit through winters and summers with no damage from the environment.

My 642 is getting more finish challenged as the years go by. Maybe someday I'll follow your lead and clean it up, or not, it's got character.

For now, I know I can't mess it up !

Nice job bringing her back to life. I too love underdogs. Maybe that is why I have a few 41 Mags. Enjoy your new jewel.

Good work; am sure you already know that pocket revolvers also attract lint and dust. At the very least, a wipedown with a clean, dry cloth once a week. Chambers and bbl, too.

Now look for a 2nd 642/442. Necessary in case your 1st goes down for service or other reasons... Good shooting!

I can relate to the addiction. My first 5 shot Snubs were Taurus 85s. I gave one to my sister and one to my brother in law. Then I went to a Colt Detective Special and a Agent. I sold them and got a Charter Arms and a 7 Shot Taurus 617. I gave the Charter to a lady friend. Traded a Glock 19 for a S&W 37. It was instant addiction. I then got a 442. I couldn’t stop. I ended up with 6 442s. Knowbody needs 6 442s. I sold 4. Soon I picked up a mint S&W 36. I think I’m finally under control. I always carry a 442 in my pocket. Then I pick one of the others for the waist band. Lately it’s been the Taurus 617. I think I’m good now, unless a 2” Model 10 or 64 should show up local. I then might loose control again. 🤷‍♂️ Oh I forgot a SP101 and LCR357 came and went somewhere in the mix. My Wife says I’m a sick man.

This thread has turned into something cool, like most snub threads. I don't know how folks EDC (new verb) 1911s or 686s. More power to them. I DO know how we carry snubs.

Amen, Kaaskop.

I laugh at the CCW classes when all the students show up with their Beretta 92s, 1911s, full size Glocks, H&Ks, Sigs, etc. They all insist they are going to carry these pistols "all day-every day."

Just met one of them last night, 6 months after his class, showing me his new pocket .380.

I'm meeting him next week to show him a REAL carry gun (J frame).

I took my CCW Qualification with a 2” 357. I was shooting Remington 357 Hollowpoint. It was cold raining and the backstop was mud. You should see how far back mud splashed when that 357 hit it. My black Carhart jacket had mud pockadots all over it.

You don't have a nice custom leather holster to go with that shiny little beauty?

Yeah, a buddy of mine got his carry permit and swears he's gonna conceal carry his .45 Springfield Tactical one day.
Meanwhile my 442 goes with me everywhere I go.

Looks like a K Frame speedloader. Or another 6 chamber.

Speed loader won’t fit without trimming the grips.

How did you remove the clear coat? That finish flakes almost immediately. I knew a guy who hosed the gun down with brake cleaner to do it. Is removing the clear coat good for the gun?

I used paint remover and let it soak over night. I would not remove the clear coat until it had flaked so bad that you can't stand it. I did this to my wife's 642. It looks good and if you work at it, can stay that way.

A snub in the pocket is my typical mode of carry especially when its warm outside.

I used sandpaper in finer grades then a scotch brite pad then steel wool after that I used a buffing wheel and jewelers ruge then finely mothers mag and aluminum polish
you can almost shave in it

I showed it to a gun store owner he though it was a 640 cent

I was up at a buddy's property.
His lil girl and I were watching him do some work . She said "daddy I wanna do some fireworks. "
I said "I got something better. "
So we turned toward the pile of dirt that we have used before for shooting at
I took the rounds out of my 624 and handed it to her and had her pull the trigger dry so she could get the feel
then I loaded one round and let her shoot ...she had to pull the trigger with both trigger fingers but she got it done and a good shot at that
only missed the can by a lil over an inch
not bad for her 2nd handgun shoot and for an 7 yo
