Default Mountain Gun prices

I am wondering what the going prices are for the Mountain Guns. I have one in 44 Magnum and am possibly looking for another Mountain Gun in 41 Magnum or other calibers. Mountain Guns seem to be hard to find and seems like everyone that has one for sale want $900+ for them. It may just be me looking in the wrong place. Any suggestions anyone has would be appreciated.

Prices are actually down from what they were a few years ago...

The 629s are usually the least expensive running between $800-900. I sold a LNIB -5 pre-IL a few months ago on GunBroker for $850.

625/.45 ACP used to bring $1200-1500 now only about $1000-1100. Sold one a few months right after the 629 for $1020.00.

625/.45 Colt seems to be one of the most popular right now with bids going up to $1300.

The last two 657s I saw sell were in the $1100 range.

Blue guns with the IL are usually under a grand...

I own a S&W 657-4 MG that routinely attracts buyers. I have turned down $1,600.00 for it recently, from the original owner. I have no intention of parting with it at the moment.

IMO, patience and diligence will usually pay off... and a pocket full of money helps too.

Well shucks, but I don't blame you. The 657 MG is the one I lack to join the group of MG's consisting of 629-4, 625-6 in both .45 calibers and the 686-5 Plus. All are excellent to LNIB. I've sold all the duplicates locally to gun buds so the ones left aren't for sale either.

Default S&W Mountain Guns

I've written several times, S&W should
bring back their Mountain Gun
thus drive down the Used MG prices.

Everyone that likes the MG should
write to S&W.

It's obvious S&W would sell all MGs.

I too have been keeping an eye out for
Mountain Guns, locally (won't buy off GB).

Prices are crazy when they show up. Grabbed
used 625 45Colt for $1k and a new from gun safe
629 44Mag for $899 plus tax.

Also, you know the enviable the S&W "Lock"
Revolvers are the next phase of collecting.

I looked for a Smith model 25 for a dedicated "Woods Gun" for about a year before I said $1500-$1700 was ridiculous. So I set out for a Mountain Gun in .45ACP that I could carry/shoot .45Super's out of for another year before I thought $1300-$1500... with less than great finishes. I finally settled on a 625-8 "JM" in .45ACP/Super off of Gun Broker for about $900 FFL fee's and everything all in. I have about 700 rounds of ACP and 100 or so .45Supers thru it since June. I've carried it in the woods (3) times and as of late have CCW'd it around town and about. It's my favorite revolver. However, the front "Patridge" sight came off Friday night upon presentation from a nice holster. Smith is sending me a new Ramped front sight. After the new front sight, Altamont combat grips, taking out, cleaning, and putting "Purple" Loctite on all the screws (half backed out on me from range use), and taking out the lock and installing a cnc machined plug into the frame... it's my favorite revolver out of the 4 I own. Would I much rather have a vintage Model 25 or a 1988-89 Mountain Gun? Yes, I would because I think the build quality and QA/QC is better. My 70's manufactured mint M-36's... you can tell their build quality and finish are better. But the 625 is good enough and is a honest use revolver with dedicated purposes. It's going to and already does get scratched, nicked, etc. and it handles my woods load very well in .45Super.

Prices are higher than their traditional counterparts regardless the caliber.

Desirability, limited product runs - it all adds up to $$.

I looked for years before I found one, a Mountain Revolver, first of the breed.

Mine had some minor issues, nothing I couldn't rectify, so my advice is to accept one in good mechanical order and perhaps overlook minor beauty issues.

Also, keep your powder dry, take your time and have the $$ at the ready so you can strike hard and fast when opportunity presents itself.

FWIW, I passed up a Mountain Gun in excellent LNIB condition because it had the IL and MIM. Kicked myself for it, but later found what I really wanted, so the wait was worth it.

I have all the Mountain Gun calibers in pre lock except for the 617 and if I were to sell them, which I am NOT I would not take less than $1400 for any of them and I would want more than that for some of them. Flame on.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but what makes, say a 657, a mountain gun?

Chamfered face of the cylinder, barrel contour, the words "Mountain Gun" engraved on the right side of the barrel are a few differences I noticed.

I just found this 29-8 Outfitters Series on Armslist several weeks ago. I had been looking for a reasonably priced one for over a year. It takes a while to find them, you just have to be patient and ready to "pull the trigger" when you find the one you want. I think I got a great deal - paying under $800 for it.

I bought "em" as they came out 629(44mag), 625(45acp),625(45LC) and 686(357) All pre-lock......Passed on the 41 since I'm not into that caliber...Wanted the 617(22LR) but they were out and gone before I found out about them.

BTW: The 4" 624(44spl) is in the mountain gun configuration except for the square butt frame.

Thanks everyone, I've been up in the air about what to buy next. I really like 357 magnums owning a 66 4", 19 4", 686 2.5", 686 4", and 586 4". I also like the 2 44 magnums I own. I have thought about a 586 or 686 in 6" or the new model 69 in 2.75" I have also thought about a Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 41 magnum because the Smith 41's are so hard to find and I can get the Ruger several hundred dollars cheaper. Anyone got any suggestions? I would appreciate anyone's thoughts.

I owned the one below for a while.

Here's my track on the .357 MG:

Smith & Wesson 686-5 Plus Mountain Gun 4-in barrel Revolver in .357 Mag. Blue Book of Gun Values (38th Edition) indicates between $650 in 95% condition and $850 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 55 recorded prices for this model gun from $475 to $1600 over a period of 14 Yrs 5 Mos ending June 1, 2017. The average price as of that date was $798. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $849. The last 10 prices I have for this model since 2/11/2013 range from $950 to $1600 averaging $1285.

kn...if you want to buy a .41 just to have a .41 the Ruger BH would be an excellent choice. I've had a dozen of them over the years but just have two left...a stock 6.5" and a custom Gary Reeder 5.5" 5 shot.

They are very reasonably priced, accurate and strong...you won't wear one out. Ruger also made a run of 4.2" and 2.75" Redhawks over the last three years... I have one of each and the 4.2" is one of the best .41s I have ever owned.

As to getting a S&W 57/657, the likelihood of finding one locally to buy is very low. I regularly go to several gun shops in the area from Connecticut to Maine and rarely see one. GunBroker, AuctionArms or one of the other online sites is the only way to go...if you want to buy something in this lifetime that is.

If you do go with a Blackhawk, if it is one of the newer ones with the black plastic grips, buy a set of smooth wood, fake ivory...anything but those cheese grader plastic ones...your hand will thank you.

Bob

I was patient and it was worth the wait . Several yrs ago I bought a Ruger NM BH in 41 magnum , 4 5/8" barrel . Someone had spent quite a bit of money on it , replaced the alloy grip frame with steel , bomar rear sight , red ramp front sight and smooth trigger action . It balances nice , nice blued finish and wood grips , packs easily for walking in the woods . I think of it as my " mountain gun " as I wasn't able to afford a S&W mountain gun . Picked it up on GB for $425 . I found a nice leather LH belt holster for $25 fits it perfectly . I'm keeping it .

My MG is a 629S purchased at auction 10 days ago, under $1000. My LC purchased last year for $600 is a re-cylinder Model 1955 Target. They are out there.

Over the past few years I've passed on a few 45 LC MGs because I thought 1K was too much. In August I found a NIB 625-6 (45 Colt) for $1250, the seller reduced the price to 1K before I could make an offer. This time I didn't pass. I changed the grips and cylinder release.

I found this 57-5 several years ago. The action was very stiff. I change out the mainspring for a Wolff but have never gotten around to firing it. She sits as a safe queen.

Wow, had no idea they were worth so much. Here's mine, 29-8 purchased about 6 years ago for $299. Not parting with it though.

Came with the box and a box of ammo minus 6. First time I shot it I understood why it was sold. The rubber grips were terrible on my hand. Tried Hogue grips but still hurt. The grips that cured the problem came from S&W, Walnut Presentation Grips

This was my first newer S&W, I can't say anything bad about it.

This morning at the Big Reno Show I stumbled upon this 629-2 Mountain Revolver with box, goodies and original Pachs. Seller was asking $895 - I took it home for $650 - price not typical in these parts. Other than a turn line, it's in perfect condition, not a scratch. It has a home next to the 625-6 MG I snagged in August.

Congrats!

That is an outstanding price for pre MIM/Pre Lock.

FWIW,the 629-3 and 629-4 are the most sought after 44mag Mountain Guns that have the full Endurance Package.

A pre MIM 625 MG in 45 Colt would be one hard to pass up.

I have a 629-1 with a 3" barrel, that I turned down $1500 for last year. I rarely shoot it, it is my favorite revolver , that I own. When I did insurance claim adjusting in New Orleans after Katrina, I carried it hidden, in my front pocket.

Same here. I have two of the same, one complete with box, combats and goodies, the other just with combats. Not sure what my bottom line would be.
