Default 629-4 Classic DX

Bought this New Old Stock 629-4 Classic DX 6 1/2" barrel. I was planning on shooting it but I am having second thoughts since the gun is in perfect condition as it had not been out of the box since 1994. In the box was this test target another set of Hogue grips, paperwork and a bag of different front sights.

Is this an official SW test target? Could you post a close up of it. Never seen one after owning countless SWs. I think shooting it is the way to go, difference in value will be minuscule if you take care of it after each outing.

I own the same piece in 5" (see my avatar). I shoot it often, but try to keep it clean and in great condition. You are missing out on shooting a fine (and fun) S&W.

A new old stock factory fired only DX like that complete with both grips, test target , docs and original box is an increasingly collectible and rare revolver.

I personally would not shoot t if it were mine. I would buy a different revolver for a shooter but that is just me.

By all means take it to the range and enjoy it!
It's one of the better guns S&W ever made.

Congrats on a great purchase

Here is the official Smith and Wesson test target. I decided I am not going to shoot this and look for a shooter.

What would be your reward for NOT shooting it?

The reward would be to a have collection of mint pristine close to 100% guns that they do not make like that anymore to both enjoy as a time capsule and also as a investment. I do have a lot of guns that I shoot and also have of ones I do not. The ones I collect are usually 98%+in their original box and all accessories. I started collecting earlier 29's and 629's in this type of condition and they have turned out to be good investments.

This one I actually bought to shoot because I came across it and I have always heard so much about the DX versions. Its not a big deal for me to put it away and find a shooter.

cool, thank you for the picture! I'm sure you know the diff between the regular ol' Classic and the DX. I'm happy to say my ol' regular one does the same.

Very nice!! It's your revolver to do with what you will and that's cool...but myself, I would have a heck of a time trying not to shoot it...Would take very good care of it though as I do all of my S&W's.

Most of the answers to the shoot or preserve it unfired question ignore this.

We only have time to shoot a limited number of guns. Many of the older members here are fortunate enough to have been able to acquire more guns than they have time for. While I've only bought guns that I intended to shoot they've not all been fired. In my 20s & 30s the thought that would happen never crossed my mind. In our position there is logic behind firing the ones that already have some wear.

BRR2521 recently sold on GB for $2000. I have a dash 4 DX,

also a dash 4 Power Port 6" and a dash 4 8 3/8'' Classic.

Power Port and 8 3/8 are more accurate than DX

An inch and a half at 50 yards. That's better than most of the .45s on the line at Camp Perry can do.

I think I might turn this puppy into the ultimate centerfire stage Bullseye pistol. Wouldn't want to be the shooters to the right or to the left of me, but hey! they'd have their ears on, and there would be no chance of any of my hot brass dropping down their shirts.

Most of us here would say that you should shoot it, but it's yours to enjoy. So if the thought of shooting it does not give you the same thrill as the thought of occasionally pulling it out of the safe to admire and otherwise knowing it's right there where you left it still in pristine condition, then by all means don't shoot it. And don't feel bad just because we're all jealous

I don't know about you, but I think 1.5" at 50 is darn respectable for a scoped 44. I feel like I'm doing pretty good to make a 6-8" group at 50 with my open sight 629 Classic.
