K6S, 640 Pro or 642PC, suggestions? ((Update, got the K6S))
I am looking at getting another j frame to pair up with my 642 PC gun below.
I have been looking and reading all of the posts from owners of all of the above. I am liking each of the above guns for what they are and was wondering what you fellow forum readers and owners suggest?
I have listed below my thoughts on each one;
K6S; REALLY like the fact that it is a 6 shot and comparable in size to the 640 pro. Heavier than air weights for better controllability and longer shooting times at the range. Better sights than the air weight J's.
640 Pro; Same size as my other j frames and speed loaders will work for all of the S&W guns. Heavier than air weights for better controllability and longer shooting times at the range. Better sights than the air weight J's. I really like the moon clips for the first 5 rounds for extracting all rounds out at once. Speed loaders for a reload though.
642PC; Same gun I have already and everything will fit regarding support equipment. I really like the moon clips for the first 5 rounds for extracting all rounds out at once. Speed loaders for a reload though. Lite weight for comfort on an all day carry mode whether pocket or belt.
Would like to hear from you guys that have had one or all of the above now that the Pro and K6S has been out for awhile. Anything I am forgetting regarding any of the above??? This would be a rotational carry gun and being in law enforcement, the 6 shot cylinder does mean allot to me. Thanks in advanced fellows....
btw, I can only find the K6S to hold and it is 799.00, no one has a Pro model anywhere so I would have to order one. I found one for 599.00 so price would be a deciding factor. I do not mind paying the extra cost for the 6 if it is worth it.
Pics of your choice would be nice to see and what holster combo you use to carry it would be much appreciated...

I have all three with my airweight being a 340PD. The Kimber is a stunner and I did buy it for the 6th round. A K frame speedloader will work with the Kimber and work quite well if you brush it up against a belt sander on all six sides.
That said, The 640Pro and the Airweight other than a 1/4" barrel length are the same gun. Holsters, speedloaders, etc. are all interchangeable.
The 640Pro has great sights and even greater looks. For most people I would tell them to go with the the 640Pro for the listed reasons.
For me the Kimber gets the nod just because of the 6th round.
Here is the Pro and Kimber with a Ruger SP101 in the mix.

"For every Jack, there's a Jill." Only you can decide that. EDC is a very personal matter: what works for one person might be a loser for another. If I had your 3 options, I would go for the 2nd 642, given my requirement to pocket-carry. However, from my recent reading on this forum, many opt for the steel frame guns. Up to you.

I’m a big fan of my standard 640. I haven’t been able to get my hands on a Kimber. But the j frames fit me real well, and the 640 is FUN to shoot.
When I want my 6 shots, I go with a k frame. Whether it be Model 10 or this newly acquired 66. Kimbers might be nice, but they are new and not a lot out for them yet (holsters, loaders, grips). I will probably look into them in a few years though. I’m trying to let the looks grow on me a bit.

I've got a 642-1 and a 640 Pro, both of which had been carried as a backup on-duty (although mainly carried a Glock 43 as a backup before retiring).
I've also had a few models 442 and a 640-1.
The Kimber K6S wasn't yet available and I'm still finding it hard to find. I now see there is a speedloader made for the K6S.
642-1. The 642 carried well on my ankle or body armor holster, and occasional pocket holster carry. Now retired, I'll now also carry it AIWB (appendix in the waistband).
640-1. The 640 Pro is slightly bigger & heavier. I ended up using a larger Pachmayr grip which made it just a bit too large for uniformed ankle carry. When carried, I used the body armor holster or open carried on a tac-vest as a 2nd handgun. Off-duty, I used either an OWB or AIWB holster. I have a shoulder holster for this, too, but rarely use/used it. This gun came up, sight unseen, on GalleryofGuns and I immediately ordered it. The small batch lasted less than a day and were, once again, sold out.
Kimber K6S. Even if I could have found one and liked it, my department's policy didn't have Kimber listed for approval as a secondary handgun. It would have been for off-duty only. Now retired, if I did run across one for sale in person, I'd just have to be in the mood to buy it as I don't need it. Another good thing is I haven't heard of any breaking yet or having any particular problems. I like how a black-colored version is coming out.

I am leaning towards another 642 as I really love the one I have. It would make sense to have another one or 2 for backups and/or extra carry ones...

If I were in your position, it would be a tough call for me.
Personally, I would probably narrow it down to the 642 and the 640 as I like the commonality WRT manual-of-arms, gear, and accessories.
I like the idea of having at least one identical back-up in case of mechanical problems or, if you needed to use your gun in a self defense situation, its confiscation as evidence. So the 642 would be a good choice. I had one gun, a 642-1, and when its hammer stud broke I was without a gun for 2 months until S&W replaced it. I now have a 642-1 and a 642ND and it is a little more comforting knowing I have a (more-or-less) identical back-up. I also have the option of carrying both, though I have yet to try that.
However, I also like the idea of having an airweight J-frame paired up with a steel-frame equivalent, so for that purpose the 640 would get the nod. One could carry the 642 and use the 640 for the bulk of practicing, with occasional use of the 642 to maintain proficiency with an airweight. You may even be able to use the same holster for both, keeping things consistent (I like consistency). As before, one could also carry both as an option. While the 640 has the ability to fire .357 Magnum, I see that as being less important as I believe I would be best served with .38 Special in a snub, steel or airweight. You may have different wants/needs.
An added bonus is that with both guns being J-frames, if one were to carry both one could use J-frame speedloaders to reload either gun. If you were to carry the Kimber and a J-frame, you'd have to use strips (which is not a bad approach, FYI, as I did that on the rare occasion I carried both a K-frame and a J-frame). But that would only be important if you plan on carrying 2 snubs.
It'll have to depend on which matters to you most. If I could, I'd get both a 640 and 2nd 642. But if limited to having 2 J-frames, right now I'd say that I'd probably want both to be 642s. Ask me later and I might change my mind.

I recently went from a 640 to a K6 for everyday summer carry. The engineering is top-notch, it's available with tritium sights (and the sights are replaceable), and of course there's the extra round. Although it's J-Frame-like, it will not fit in J-Frame holsters, so keep that in mind. If you decide on one, the standard HKS 10-A speedloader works fine; no need to spring for the fancy one from Kimber.
By the way, the Kimber is available with a 3" barrel, which I definitely ogled but eventually decided against.
Edit to add: the holster I'm using is one that fits a Ruger SP101, so if you have one of those, you're all set.

I admit that I'm biased toward the 640's, either regular or Pro. I not had the opportunity to see or handle the Kimber yet, but I do like the 6 round capability. Since you already own a 642 the manual of arms, holsters, and speedloaders will all be pretty much the same for both guns.

The Kimber is nice, but the night sights and moon clips make up for the extra round in the K6S. Another major advantage that steered me to get the 640 Pro was the lifetime warranty vs 1 year on the Kimber. I carry 3 moon clips on me in a cell phone case. Price wise the 640 pro wins also. Grabagun has the 640 PRO for sale now at $599.00, better price than most have on the standard 640.

I flirted with the K6s but there is just something about the 640 Pro that I love. Carry it everyday.

Love your choices! My carry revolver is a little different. My edc is a S&W MODEL 60 NO DASH 2" & a Glock 30s or a Kimber Pro Carry 4".I saw an handled a K6S 2"when they first came out.I really liked it ...but...$1,100!!I could afford it but decided to wait.Short time later I heard Kimber was introducing a K6S 3"! I saw one at a gun show...$1,100! Gunbroker had a K6S 3"on Auction...I bid & won! When I got it went to the range....I love it! I love the 3"...but....now I may NEED to see what KIMBER has coming out next revolver wise...maybe a 9MM!

Yeah, they were way overpriced at first. When they first showed up in my neighborhood, they were in the 900s. Now they're in the 700-750 range, so I finally broke down and got one.

I used to think that moon clips were really stupid. A 325, and then a 625, changed my mind. It's really satisfying to just toss the cartridges toward the cylinder and fwap! you're loaded. I can definitely see the appeal for a 640.
Night sights aren't a differentiator, though. My Kimber came with tritium.
You're surely right about the limited warranty-- it's like Kimber doesn't have confidence in their products. I guess they must have read some of the stories about their customer service.

I saw a few at Cabela's last night and they really look great. The warranty issue is one of the big reasons I am straying from it though as it has only been out a almost a couple of years, it just not seem to me to be enough time to tell whether it will be a good buy or not yet....
Cabela's also had another one of my 642PC guns which i almost bought! I am leaning really hard to go back and get it too. I just loves those damn PC J Frames for the money!

I also just got off of the phone with Kimber Customer service. The CS rep advised that they do only have a 1 year warranty but that they would fix anything defect wise for the entire time that the original owner has the gun. Now, that is great to hear but sucks if you are trying to sell one and did not like it. Man on man i am really on the fence here. I really really like that K6S revolver every time I hold it and pull that trigger. And I really like the fact that it has that 'extra" round in it. I think I can get one for around 750.00 too which is not that far off of the 640 Pro.
Problem with getting a pro model is I have to order it without looking at it and seeing the post from today about the guy that got his without the 'pro series" marked on the side and the dirty part makes me want to NOT buy one through the mail. I know S&W would take care of it but then I am out my new gun because of something that should have been done from the get go. All of the stores around here have the K6S for me to fondle which is why I have become partial to that weapons system. Damn, decisions, decisions.....

640 Pro for me. Lightweight has too much recoil, had em and sold em. The extra few ounces mean nothing to me. It is either in a belt slide holster or just tucked in the belt. I use the Hogue grips for extra hold and comfort. I know you lose ballistics with the short barrel but a 357 is still king over 38+P. All around perfect gun in my opinion. Check out the Kimber forum, you will find lots of issues with the K6S.

Well I went today and rented a K6 from the local range. Pics below are what I did. The K6 was the chest shots and my 642pc was the head shots at 7 yards. I really liked the Kimber. The other target was shot at 15 and 25 yards with the Kimber. Lines through the shots were the 15 yard shots and the circles were at 25 yards non supported. Needless to say I bought one today with night sights because I was so impressed. Got a great deal on it to boot. My 642PC is pictured with the range gun I rented. Looking forward to getting this new gun broke in....
I know these 2 guns are somewhat different but other than the 7 extra ounces the K6 has over my PC gun, the guns shot the same 38 ammo out of each to get these groups. I do give the sights on the K6 the edge over the standard j frame sights but I cannot say enough about the triggers on these Kimbers. Sorry S&W guys but I may be a convert...

That's some good shooting there. I can see that you're no stranger to firing a snubnose. Congratulations on the new friend!
A small thing that impresses me about the little guy is the hex-head screws. I like to take the cylinder and yoke out when I do a "serious" cleaning, and with the Kimber I don't have to worry about a screwdriver slipping and leaving a scratch. Yes, I'll confess to having occasionally been clumsy with a hand tool...

Enjoy your new gun. It is always nice to have something different and my Kimber has been flawless and a joy to shoot.

I'm a huge K & L frame owner but the Kimber K6S impressed me by it's fit and finish. I'm sure I would have been happy with a 640 Pro but chose a K6S instead. I've put 150 rounds downrange and have been very happy with it's performance and accuracy. For me it conceals and carries well aiwb.

Very nice, I have checked out a the Kimber a couple times and may try one soon, I almost bought one a few months ago but bought the Colt Cobra instead, and really like that as well, not as easy to carry as my 340 M&P but much easier to shoot well. I also agree about the 3" Kimber looking extremely awkward, I saw one last week..

Since we have so many guys here that have looked into or have actually purchased a K6s maybe you guys can answer a couple of questions. first off, those little baby grips are not going to work for me. When I looked into the Kimber a while back there were no after market grips available. All of my J, K, and L frame revolvers have Uncle Mikes combat grips. Has anything similar (Hogues maybe) been offered by anyone lately? Also, those sights. Does anyone make replacements. Are they a standard size dovetail (could standard Novak's work) or Kimber only. Also, what about leather. Without a good comfortable holster it ain't gonna work. I normally carry OWB at the 11 o'clock position with an M&P340. Being on my belt helps take up the weight but I need a comfortable holster. The Kimber is just too expensive to become a sock drawer gun.

Altamont offers wood grips but I have not seen anything rubber as of yet. Dont know about the sights either. I am having a kydex aiwb holster made this weekend for mine. Kimber does offer some leather holsters on their site from Galco for the K6. I am sure you could find one of them at a cheaper price somewhere else.

I've always been intrigued with 640 Pro. At the end of the day however, it can't do what my SP101 can already do right? I have a 3" SP101 which both shoots & balances well. I would consider the 640 Pro from your options as you can share holsters with the wheel guns you already own.
Good luck!

Believe me, i considered the 640pro but there was not one anywhere in my neck of the woods and I am not buying a 700 gun through the mail and not be satisfied and have to return it. Basically, S&W lost a sale to me because no one stocks that gun. I know that sounds lame but it led me to the K6 which I really like. I have no issue paying the "premium" if it is worth it and so far I think it is worth it! As far as oddities for the K6, I have already bought a HKS speed loader and am using it. Holsters are always kydex for me so that is not that expensive. More to come if you guys want it...

I have had one for quite awhile. No break in necessary. Mine came with factory lasergrips which I very seldom with on unless I am carrying the gun. Personally I find I get better accuracy with me taking a low grip on the gun meaning the bulge in the grip fits in the pocket of my shooting hand. In this position my finger is in the perfect position to sweep straight back. Being able to shoot this gun accurately (out to 50'/ laser off) using that grip means I will not have to switch to some oversize grip somewhere down the line. I hope I am being clear in my description of my low on the backstrap hold. Be aware that different bullet weights will change your POA. With a little practice your gun should group like a champ. I do most of my shooting at an indoor range where the minimum distance is 30'. Once you are good at longer distances anything short of that is easy-peasy.
As for Holsters, immediately after purchasing the gun I found this guy is Texas that makes a really solid, very stiff, leather holster with a slight lip allowing ease of re-holstering. He is so good I had him make one for my 3" 686+. MD Whitefield Leather – MD Whitefield Leather Holsters
