Finally found my 340
Been searching for awhile for the right price, new in the case with laser grips and Tritium front sight. These retail for around
1200. found this for 800. I'm very happy, just not sure about the Scandium Alloy Frame.

I have two of these little lightweight J-frames.
You'll need to make your own determinations, but in my own considered experience, after shooting between 20 and 50 rounds of ALL premium commercial .357 Magnum JHP loads in bullet weights from 110gr to 158gr vs. several different .38 Special+P JHP loads, NONE of the .357 loads were as accurate or precise as the better .38 Special+P loads.
The best accuracy plus precision of all the tested loads in these 340PDs, IME, was .38 Special Gold Dot 135gr+P JHP.
I'm not "recoil sensitive", and wasn't unduly bothered by the admittedly-uncomfortable sharp impulse of the .357 loads, so I'm personally quite convinced about the innate accuracy and precision of the various loads I tested in these guns.
Take it FWIW, and decide for yourself by trying some load comparisons.
The S&W 340PD and the Ruger LCR currently represent the most extreme balance between "lightest weight" plus "most powerful" CCW revolver options available.
While shot-to-shot recovery is slow, to be sure, it's nonetheless true that for a gun that's "carried much, shot little", the 340PD is certainly a viable choice for some of us, at least some of the time, especially in hottest weather when only a small lightweight gun will do for CCW.

I've been carrying a 340 for a couple of years now, been very happy with it. My preference is to carry the .38 135gr GDHP, but the .357 125gr Golden Saber works good too.

have the same set up and love it. As previously said, shooting .357mag isn't overly pleasant, but I like having the ability to carry .357mag in a j frame size....

Thanks for the input. I think this revolver is great for carry. Quality is very good as is the trigger for a double action. CT grips are a plus, std grips came with it but, I doubt I'll use them. I have a dozen plus boxes of Winchester 38 Special 110 gr+P ammo to use up, doubt I'll ever shoot 357 out of it...
well I might just to try it but, don't see the need in such a light gun. I'll try it out tomorrow.

Super gun. Why would you worry about the Scandium frame. Stronger and lighter than their alloy's. My 340pd has been nothing but a performer.

Decode the label..... 05-AD-SM-GC-B2-SF-SN-FA-CS-ZB05 - Five shot
AD - Double Action only
SM - SMall frame
GC - Grips Crimson trace laser
B2 - two piece Barrel
SF - Sight Fixed (rear)
SN - Sight Night (tritium front)
FA - Frame Alloy (blast shield tells you it scandium)
CS - Cylinder Stainless (blackened)
ZB - Blue/Black finish
Based on the style of label, I'd say it left the factory in..... c. 2008.

It occurred to me, since it's almost 10 years old, and given the half life of tritium, how's the brightness of the front lamp looking? It should be getting near the point where you might want to have the front blade relamped.

It is still very bright, looks like a night light on my night table, easy to find. I guess because it was NIB never used it stayed as new. I don't know.

Is there a date code on the blade? I think some were made with a code. Maybe it's not as old as I thought, or maybe they last longer. I do know they dim over time. Half life of tritium is just 12 years.

Yes, code is H3 08, I would say you are correct on the date. Thanks.
