I recently came in to a 6" 16-4 but it didn't have a rear sight. what are the proper dimensions for a replacement?

Does it have the rounded front tang. If so, Brownell's should have them, or even S&W. Give them a call. The rear sight blade height should be .146".

SMITH & WESSON SIGHT ASSEMBLY, REAR, .146", N/S, W/O, 4-6" BARREL | Brownells

The 16-4 was discontinued in 1993, which is when Smith started using the round tang rear sight, and drilled & tapped the top strap. There is no indication in the engineering change section of the SCSW IV that these changes were made to the 16-4, so I'd assume that your 16-4 would have had the square tang rear sight.

That is unfortunate as they are no longer available, other than in the secondary market, like eBay, Gun Broker or used part sellers like Numrich or Sarco. If you go with the secondary market, the good news is that all square tang K, L and N frame sights are the same dimensionally, with two exceptions: 1) Blade height - easily changed since the blade design has not changed, so still available from Smith. 2) The hole spacing between the elevation screw and the front mounting screw. Make sure that when purchasing the hole spacing matches your gun.

One alternative is Bowen's Rough Country rear sight. He makes a version with a blank, square tang that must be drilled to match your guns hole spacing. Something best done by a gunsmith or machinist. While this alternative is not cheap, the sight is superior to the OE sight.

Good luck.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

That Brownells add is incorrect. I just checked both my 16-4 and my 17-4 and they are both Square front sight assembly's. Check with S&W possibly they have some older ones left. Or Numrich for used parts.

I'll break out the calipers and measure CTC difference.
Thanks for the quick response!

+1 What he said.
And IMO, if converted to .327 Fed mag, its even more fun.
My M16-4's have squared fronts sight bases. Aesthetics aside, if holes match, wouldn't round bases work?

The screw for the new ones is bigger. Hole location is probably wrong too.
The hole location on the old square ones was all over depending on model of gun, the hole on the new rounded ones is the same on all.
