Default Well, I think I bought a "pig in a poke"

Picked up a S&W PC .460 last week. Found that I need a three hole rail to go on top of the milled in rail that is on top of the barrel. That extra rail did not come with the gun (used). Called S&W to buy the rail and was told that they do not have the rails anymore. He ask for the serial number to get an idea about which gun I have and upon checking he said the gun was made in 2007 AND was under a recall. So its off to S&W instead of being off to the woods.

Glad I have the new gun, but not happy to have the aggravation. Oh well, we live and learn.

Maybe when it comes back from S&W a rail will have miraculously appeared...

I believe it was a barrel issue; someone else here knows for certain.

The recall was due to a barrel hardness issue. Of all models involved only two barrels have been found to need changing per my S&W resource.

Your gun is a Lew Horton exclusive, 702 guns were produced.
Lew Horton will provide you with a letter for your gun upon request.

Love the balance of this barrel length. Congrates on your find.

Be safe

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it is a possible barrel issue. I am hoping to get it back in time for the end of hunting season. maybe I can go from a "pig in a poke" to a "pig on the ground".

By the way, I really like the balance of the gun along with the 7.5" barrel. Hope they do not send it back with a longer one.

Thanks for the heads up about it being a Lew Horton special.

Happy Sunday to you all!

You could buy a rail from Jack Wiegand and trim the length. I'm not sure why the existing one doesn't meet your needs?
All the pistol scopes I can think of are long eye relief design so you don't need the scope very far back on the rail. Just my $0.02.

Gentlemen,

Thank you all for the info and advice.
I am mounting an Aimpoint on the .460 and the spacing of the milled in mount is not long enough, by just a tiny bit, to accommodate the necessary ring spacing in the Aimpoint. I must find the three hole base to do what I want.

I am sure one will find me eventually.

Thanks, Karnivore

Thanks to "sw282" my 460 is complete. He was nice enough to give me a heads up on a S&W mount on Gunbroker. I bid, won then waited. It came UPS today and I could not wait to assemble the rig. The best 31.00 I have spent in a long time.

Thanks again sw282 and all that responded.

With a 460 or 500 you can poke just about anything you want.

So, I take it that your gun has returned. Did Smith have to replace anything? How long before it came back?

Did you say recall or recoil?

The SKU for his gun is 17263 with SN range LLL0000-0702

The SN LHZ0000 to LHZ0511 is for the 3.5" Lew Horton Carry Comp

The 17067 SKU is for the 7.5" Ellet Brothers Black Hunter SN EBD0001-0524 range

The actual issue were found on the 12" model per my S&W contact, all other models with Loather barrels have been found OK.

good luck and be safe
