Default Dating Combat Grips,, AND Dating 617 No Dash

My 617 no-dash has the serial # BPB41XX

Today, I received a set of combat grips in the mail,, that I can almost read the date.
When were combat grips made? I was wondering if knowing when they were made would help in guessing what date was stamped inside?

I was just wondering how close the grips are in date to the 617,,

Either way, my 617 looks much better with the new grips!

Revolvers with the BPB serial number prefix were shipping in Febuary to June of 1993. Mostly in February and March.

Your grips appear to have a July 1992 ink stamp. It predates the gun's ship date so it's possible it's factory original. Typically the dates are closer, like a few weeks or a month or two, but a six month separation is not impossible.

Thanks for the info!! That makes the purchase even more special,,

This is my "woods walking" gun,, I just always liked the feel of this style grip.

Think the colonel is right on. Looks like 1992 to me. Further, they didn't make those combats in 1982 or 2002.

The rear sight on your 617 is a Millett which was very desirable with the bullseye guys. They are no longer made and finding them is hit and miss, mostly miss, and a tad expensive when you manage to hit. I have them on both of my no-dash 617s as well as several other S&W revolvers. A replacement factory sight shouldn't be hard to find if you want the original part to complete the package.

Thanks for all the inputs!!
I have several 22 rimfires, but, this one has always been my go-to shooter.
Many thousands of rounds were fired in this gun in the early 2000's,,,

The gun has literally killed more than a hundred raccoons.
It even has a few crows, and 2 ground hogs.

Now, with these grips, I like the gun that much more!!
