Found a nice 19-5...
I need this like I need a hole in my head, but the price seems tempting. LGS has a 19-5 with the only wear marks visible on the front sight. 4" barrel I believe. The price seemed too good to be true, but I don't know.
Any thoughts on what the going price for this should be? I may need to go back there with some trade fodder...

Did you examine the gun? You don’t mention a price. It’s hard to say what you’re up against. A decent 4-inch 19-5 is worth around $500-$600 in my neck of the woods, maybe a bit more.

I didn't examine it, but if I go back I'll check the workings. I was hesitant to say their asking price, I didn't want to jinx it. $575.

Fair price around here, but not a give away. Look it over closely. If it’s good mechanically don’t hesitate to see if less ($500-525?) will buy it.

I bought a clean 4" 19-4 about a month ago.
Nickel plate, better than 90%. I got it for six bills. If you do not have a model 19 already you should jump on it.

As I've said to others before, "Don't collect 200 as you pass go, buy it!"

As with all new and previously owned firearms, examine it closely before handing over your cash.
With the K frame make sure you examine the forcing cone for a crack in the 6 o'clock area, lock up and timing on each cylinder hole, barrel bulge and hammer push off.
The exterior condition can tell you how well the revolver was cared for.Look at the side plate screws for buggering.
A lot of guns will have aftermarket spring kits installed in them.

One sold here about 6 months ago in the same condition or maybe bit worse for $625, and it sold within a week after it hit the shelf.

The 19-5 is nice, very little wear, no forcing cone crack. The same seller also consigned a really clean 629-1 with 6" barrel for $925 and a model 29-something with 4" barrel for a little over a thousand bucks.

While everybody is just eat up with the pinned and recessed M19's, I find the -5 to be the peak in styling. TT and TH show up a lot more than the earlier guns. Factory combats were just made for this gun (same era). My nickel 19-5 is the prettiest one I own, and, maybe, the prettiest Smith I own. I got in really cheap on this one, but don't let the price stop you. I did have to add the combats, but they are period/date correct.

From a practical point of view (my view) the 19-5
is preferred for a lot of DA shooting as it doesn't
have the recessed chambers.
Those recesses are a pain as they just collect enough
little bits of dust/grit to prevent a solid and fast reload with a
speed loader.

Looked at it again today, there are some blemishes that make me wonder if it was re-blued over some corrosion. Why not smooth it out before refinishing? Not sure what's going on there.
Otherwise it's in good shape. A couple of tiny scratches in the frame, sights, and grips. I talked them down to $550, but I'm not that hot to buy it.

I got a decent 19-3 for $265 last month. What sold me was the recessed cylinder.
