Shot placement is key!!

Been carrying my 66 2 1/2" in a nice pancake holster lately, falling in love with the model 66 again. Handles the .357 magnum load well, and shoots the 38 special like a dream. No matter what else I bring to the range, I put a few rounds down range with the 66.

Nice trio! Just got back from the range a couple hours ago and once again my 4" 66-1 shined like gold hammering out a quarter size group double action at 30'.

I had never owned a 66 until I traded into a 4" 66-2 today. On Tuesday I'll be picking up a police trade-in 66-1 with the 2.5" barrel.

As far as I'm concerned, there are two types of people...Those who own 66's, and those that will after they shoot one...

My favorite 66 is a 2.5” 66-1.

We carried 4" model 66 when I was hired on to the Sheriff's Office. I liked them fine, but later found the model 65 and prefer it. I sold almost all my revolvers when we changed to the model 645. I have bought two J frames back, and plan on buying the new 3" model 66 in lieu of buying a used model 65, when I have the money saved back up.

My model 66 in 4'' is the gun I regret selling the most(along with my 5'' model 1988 in .45acp).Why do you guys keep posting photos of such a beautiful gun?Guess you like seing a 63 yrs old guy cry!

Not in the catalog as a production gun, but one never says never about S&W.

This ? comes up on occasion. The only such example I have seen was in the Clint Eastwood flick "The Gauntlet." His character definitely carries a SB snub 66 with service-style SB Magna stocks. I have no idea how it came about. This is confirmed in the IMDB for "The Gauntlet."

Mas Ayoob once mentioned swapping bbls between a 4" and a snub 66, the end result being a RB 4" gun that would conceal well under an outer garment and a SB snub that would handle better in snub nose matches. Hope this helps a bit.

Ukraine -- now more than ever

The Model 66 has a special place in my heart as my first two issued, carry, guns were Model 66's. First a 2.5 inch "-1" and then a four inch "-2."

I searched for a three inch for years and found two in one week. First one is a "-5" Lew Horton. Second is a "-2" Ashland.

When we changed from the 2.5 to 4 inch we were offered the dash one guns for $150. That was a lot of money in 1983 and my gun, which was issued to me used, was out of time and shaved lead so I did not buy it. This gun was not marked so I rationalized that I could replace it later. It took 25 years, but I found this one, for $400. It was the issued gun of a county sheriff who never carried it. I got the gun, grips on it, original grips, box and all that came with it, so it was worth the wait.





In 1983 we changed to the four inch. This one was agency marked. Its the only one of that issue that was involved in a shooting situation. These gun were issued with "PC" Magna grips and Tyler T grip adapters.







Model 66-2 Ashland. The grips on this gun are like the ones that originally came on the "-5."





Model 66-5, Lew Horton. This is the "most scarce" of my Model 66 accumulation. One of about 300.

The only Model 66 I've ever owned was a no-dash LEO trade in I bought in the mid-'80s. The day I got it I had access to a gunsmith's trove of parts and promptly "blueprinted it" by selective parts replacement. It was shot a lot in informal PPC matches as well as just during fun range time, and eventually had its 4" barrel replaced with a new 6". After being a faithful companion for well over 25 years it was rewarded by being upgraded to become Project 616 and I made what I thought was the logical decision to replace it with a Model 686 no dash (6") to "improve" my overall battery. The point of all of this is that I still miss my Model 66 and probably won't be totally satisfied until I "scratch that itch" with another one, probably a Model 66-1 with 4" barrel. So many guns, so little time and money!

The first gun that I bought as an adult (18) was a 4" model 66-2. It was an LE trade-in for new plastic G****. Sadly, it was stolen along with a very fine automobile many years ago.

In my current collection: 2.5" -2, 4" no dash, and 3" -4 (sorry, no pics of this one yet. I let a 4" -1 go to a co-worker who had just turned 21 and needed to be able to carry in his truck when he makes trips to the valley.

You'll love the P&R features. I also have the 66-1 2.5" along with the same in a 19-3. They don't particularly shoot better than my later non P&R guns but I think they stand out for what they are. As for love for the 66's I have plenty for all the K frames.

I've only got one. A 4", -1, Virginia State Police 50th anniversary model. Number 194 of 1500 I'm told.





I've got the wooden presentation case that is in excellent condition.

Wasn't he the crooked detective who shot Denise Richards's character in, "Wild Things"? Darn, I hated that! I love Denise.

I can't recall the gun he used. I think Neve Campbell used a spear gun on one guy, and Matt Dillon had a spear gun at his house. I think one of the guns left by Denise's dead dad was a Walther PPK. ??

I need to find my DVD and see that movie again. I think it was Denise's best role, although I liked her in, "Starship Troopers" and as the Bond girl in that film where she played Dr. Christmas Jones. "The World Is Not Enough"?

Being stainless and perfectly balanced, this 4” ND is as fine a specimen as I own.

I've had a few 66s, down to one now.

The first was a snub I carried quite illegally while delivering pizzas and driving cabs during college in Illinois. I sold it off when I went in the Air Force.

The second was a 4" I bought on Guam. I loaned it to my then-fiance (now wife of 30 years) who kept it in her little Mazda pickup, mostly to humor me. One dark night she had a flat tire on the back road to Anderson AFB. No cell phones in those days. A guy stopped and helped change the flat, then tried to push his way into the pickup for his payback. She leveled the 66 in his mug, and not knowing what else to do rolled that hammer back. The guy backed out, and she just dropped the gun on the seat and I decocked it later. I sold it to another AF guy when I transferred.

This one I got from one of the founding members of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT). He had it Magna-ported in violation of all Bureau regs, which bothered him not in the least. He traded it to me for a Marlin Camp Carbine just after he retired. He somehow had a large accumulation of .45 ACP ammo, and wanted to burn it up with a grandkid who was learning to shoot a rifle. Its a no-dash.







I'll hang on to this one.

How do you like the latest version? Been tossing that one around since it came out. Just never put the money together.

The latest version is my EDC right now. Fantastic trigger (after 500 to 1000) rounds. Very accurate. I sent it back originally to get the forcing cone and muzzle cleaned up. I plan on getting a 45° crown and an 11° forcing cone for lead reloads in the spring.
