Default A question about stocks

I don't ever pretend to be very knowledgeable on technical matters with respect to S&W revolvers but after awhile around this campfire I do think I've learned a thing or two. So I was very surprised this evening to discover that the two sets of custom elk stocks I obtained from bigmtnman that I had for quite some time but never used not only fit my M27 Classic perfectly but the one set I didn't use also fit my M10 .357 Magnum perfectly. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

I'm just confused about frame sizes now.......

Any help will be appreciated and any abuse will be warmly accepted......y'all can cure my ignorance, of that I have no doubt.

K L M N X round butt square butt
the confusion is whether we need to buy new grips to fit the particular frame/model, OR to buy a new gun to fit the grips we've been somehow moved to purchase....

good luck

N frame magnas should be noticeably “proud “ around the grip frame of a K frame like your 10-6. Those appear to fit very nicely as I also have experienced with bgmntmans stocks. Do they interchange and fit the N frame Model 27 Classic as well?

When the grip frame was standardized by S&W to a round butt, it was based on K-Frame dimensions.

That's why the grips both fit on your M27 Classic and the M10.

That would not be the case on older N-Frames.

Yes, they interchange.

Gunhacker,
I agree with your assessment as it relates to the round butt guns. The two revolvers ISCS Yoda is referring two are both square butt revolvers from different eras. I’ve never owned one of the new IL N frame square butt guns, so if the grips interchange did S&W also standardize all new N square butt to the K frame size?

Don't have a K frame t try them on but they fit well on this N frame I built it the 80s. I used rb stocks from a Model 10 as a pattern.

Ah... did not realize that S&W went with a square butt grip frame on the new Classics... but I wonder whether or not they might have followed suit and used K-Frame grip frame dimensions, as they did with the round butt?. That would definitely explain things, if in fact the grips fit perfectly on the newer N-Frame.

Ah... I did not realize that S&W went with a square butt grip frame on the new Classics, and assumed it was a round butt with square conversion grips. But I wonder whether or not they might have followed suit and used K-Frame grip frame dimensions, as they did with the round butt?. That would definitely explain things, if in fact the grips fit perfectly on the newer N-Frame.
