Thoughts on a Model 66-2 2.5?
Hi all! Need some expert opinions on this one. I have a chance to own a 66-2 snub thats like new in the box. How reliable is the 66-2? Any loads i should stay away from or any issues with this particular model?
This is going to be a range gun/occasional carry gun and I havs been on the hunt for a pre-lock stainless 357 for a while! Interested to here everyones opinions! Thanks!

I’d keep the use of full magnum loads to a minimum but aside from that enjoy! I have a 4” M66 on the way that may have only been to the range a couple of times. The M19 & M66 were some of the best from S&W.

As always, check the forcing cone for signs of previous damage. Check out overall health of gun for end shake, push-off, timing, wear.
Avoid light bullet magnum loads, and you should be good to go.
Best of luck.

The snub 66 along with his blued brother the model 19 are great revolvers. K frame magnums are safe to use with heavier bullets. They were designed to be used with 158 gr.
You'll love your model 66-2.

I bought my 66-2 last March at the local gun show. No box or papers, and "Goodyears". Was marked $795. Got it down a little to $725, OTD. I have never carried it. It consumes 38 specials. Love shooting it at the range. My 10-5 is quite fun also. Bob

So you're saying I should get a 686?? Ha
I'll be definitely shooting mostly 38's, but I'd like to put at least a few hundo worth of 357's through it. Hot 125 grain loads are no bueno - like a 19?

Over time, the 110 and 125 grain .357 screamers will noticeably accelerate wear and, damage the forcing cone. Feel free to ask me how I know this.
As noted by others above, the 66 and the 19 were designed to handle the 158 grain .357 magnum load. Why go with anything else?
Well, actually, there is another way to go if you find the muzzle blast and flash from the 158 grain .357s objectionable, and many people do. Go with the old FBI load -- 158 grain LSWCHP .38 Special +Ps made by Remington and others. That round has been proven reliable and is more than sufficient to get the job done should the need for serious social work arise. I trust my hind parts to the combination of that round and a Model 66 no dash 2-1/2 incher every time I leave the house. I never feel underarmed.
