Default S&W 681 no dash Pawnshop Find

I've been purposely trying to stay out of my LGS as well as local pawnshops due to my inability for passing up something interesting or uncommon. I was out and about yesterday and felt my truck pulling to one of my favorite pawnshops on the right side of the road ahead. Resistance was futile and I had to go in. Sure enough there was a nice 681 no dash sitting in the case with a much lower price than the other revolvers surrounding it. The salesman made me an even better OTD offer I couldn't refuse and it came home with me.

It had rubber grips and slight corrosion under them (as expected), but not too bad and the wood grips I replaced them with covered the minor blemishes. It does have the "M" stamp on the crane. Overall a very nice, clean 681 with tight lock-up and buttery smooth trigger.

I really need to have better self control, but the gun gods have been shining down on me lately. I keep finding nice, clean, uncommon S&W revolvers for irresistible prices almost every time I hit the shops. I don't know how long this luck will last, but I'm not going to kick myself later for not buying the deals when I see them.

Thanks for the photo. It lets me know what a 681 looks like as I have never seen one "in the flesh." I salute you for your good luck in finding primo condition firearms. Know you are performing a public service in keeping that gun from someone who doesn't understand or respect it.

I have a 681 , it's very accurate with anything I feed it , from 38spl to full blown 357's w/180 cast bullets . I did put some fluorescent lime green paint on the front sight . Regards , Paul

That's a great catch. A front end alignment would probably fix your truck pulling...or maybe not.

It was sitting next to a Model 36 marked $599. and a 64 for $899.

I used to avoid the pawnshops because of the high prices, but for some reason unbeknownst to me, I keep running into these oddballs that are under priced.

I passed up a couple over the past year and each time I went back, they were gone. I learned my lesson and now I'd rather deal with my wife's wrath before I pass on bargain S&W's. She is a usually a good sport after I explain the cost to value ratio.

The weird part is it always seems to pull to the side of the road that has guns for sale. It sometimes takes two hands to hold it on the road!

Wow, that’s a crazy good price! I found one NIB last year(without M stamp) at a local gun show. Got it for $580 and flipped for $800.

Congrats!

my truck pulled exactly like yours whenever passing gun shops...no matter what side of the road.

Funny thing though...it only pulls when the wallet is heavy with Benjamins mixed with a few Grants....no pulling at all when less than $100 aboard....so that's your problem....it is simply a gravity thing...try letting the wife handle all the big bucks, give you a pittance allowance and almost guaranteed......no more pulling of the truck...you will simply need a towel to mop up the tear stains everywhere.

Really good find....I hadn't seen one in the "flesh" before either, so thanks for the "enabling" that this forum is very, very, good at.

Red face

You will probably grow to love your 681. I have two 581, no dash, no M, pistols. One is blue and the other is a factory nickel. Both have butter smooth actions, are very accurate and shoot to point of aim at 25 yards, with 158 gr. bullets. You can't ask for better than that.

Default NON BEGINERS LUCK

CONGRATULATIONS. The first S&W's I ever bought for my own use were on the night of Barry O's 2nd election. A 640 & a 681, both no dash's 650$ for both. I think I set a speed record for shaking his hand and saying SOLD. I could probly make my money back now?

Tony, if that is the same Pawn I have in mind, I want to thank you for keeping me from buying something I didn't need. I went in today to look at it again and probably would have taken it, but it was gone. Nice piece to begin with and it appears that you have cleaned it up nicely. I also prefer the targets. Enjoy it. Proof that “Snooze you loose”

If it was in PSL, it's probably the same one. They almost always have something that is interesting and gone on my next visit.

I forgot they guys name, but I've bought a few from him over the past year, so he usually takes good care of me.

That is why I need to stay away!

I was simply doing the first browse of the day on here, but when I saw the 681 pic, I had to go ahead and log in. GREAT GUN! GREAT PRICE! I have my 681 that I was issued on May 28, 1987, Clarke County Georgia Police. Bought it when we transitioned to the 4006 in 1992. You have a keeper there!

That is why I always keep a couple grand-$ stuffed away just in case I run across a fine deal like that. No use staying away from the gun stores, it just doesn't work or last. Today I saw a S&W 629, 4" pre-lock 44 mag beauty in the glass case for 8 bills. Nice but I already have one.

See what I mean...

Nice catch! FYI, in case you didn't know, that gun originally shipped with PC magna stocks. I have one like new in the box. That's how I know.

Self control does not always work with our kind.
Heart overpowers head, but then head knows that these are great investments!!!

Nice find, nice story, and nice price!!

Good job. You got a lot more gun for the money than the other two the Pawn shop had for sale.
