Most reputable online seller?
I wish to purchase a new Smith & Wesson Model 640 PRO/Performance Center: S&W SKU= #178044. Please direct me to your top 2 favorite online sellers that YOU have successfully ordered from without snafu's. I live near Louisville, KY and have considered Ky Gun Company (Bardstown, KY) & Bud's Guns (Lexington). Any experiences with either of these sellers in particular? Thanks in advance to gentlemen who seem always to KNOW what they are talking about! If you have a contact name to recommend anywhere, I would like to drop your name. Thanks in advance!

I'm going to be 100% honest in hopes of being helpful.
If you order a new S&W today -and- there is a problem, it won't matter a darn lick who your retailer was. All that will matter is your interaction with Smith & Wesson.
With that said, Bud's are good people and one of the internet's biggest (ever) dealers, and having a LOT of history means that they do have some detractors. For what you seek, they are a perfectly fine option but you will pay tax if you are a KY resident.
If you want another great suggestion -- Grabagun out of Texas.

Howdy ron4735!
I've used Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore with success and no problems as have other friends. Bud's worked well even though it wasn't a gun I bought. Another friend bought a 642 from Smoky Mountain Arms and it was a smooth transaction. Hope this helps!

Of the two, I have only dealt once with Bud's. It was a pleasant experience.

Have purchased from Bud's and grabagun with no problems and can recommend them both.
I've got a LGS/pawn shop with a huge inventory. I've bought 2 pistols and 2 shotguns from him in the last year or so. He'll ask me "cash or card?" and then go on-line. He's come back with a price dollars off on-line dealers before tax. I don't mind paying a few dollars more to keep someone like him going. Every other LGS around here can kiss my...

I have had great luck with Grabagun, Sportsman Outdoors Superstore, Brownells and Sportsman Guide. Brownells seems to ship the fastest and if you are lucky you can usually find a discount code to take an extra $20 off the price of the gun!
I always give my LGS a chance to match the price and they usually can't. They seem perfectly happy taking my $25 transfer fee from me when I pick up a gun I ordered online. I also will occasionally pick up a box of shells or a holster while I am in there!

Bud's (but sales tax for you), Grabagun (TX), CDNN (TX), Sportsman Guide (MN)... and gunbuyer.com (FL).
I echo Sevens' comment above: if there is a firearm problem, you'll be dealing with S&W, not with the internet retailer.

Gunbroker IF........
If you can find a seller on Gunbroker with a long record and an A+ rating you can be pretty sure that it's ok. I've bought 1/2 dozen guns from there, at least, and have had no problems.

I've bought several guns from Bud's, a couple from Kentucky Gun and recently bought a gun from Grabagun out of Texas. All transactions with these companies went well. I've also bought several used revolvers off of GunBroker and was satisfied with all of them too. I just sent payment to a guy from Pennsylvania for a nice nickel 3 1/2" 27-2 package of gun, sliver box, presentation case and papers and tools. This is a GB buy.

I've bought a number revolvers & long guns from both Buds & Davidsons Gallery of Guns. No problems or issues with any of them. Highly recommend both. As mentioned above, with any warranty issues its best to deal directly with S&W to resolve.

Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo often has some of the best prices I can find and they usually ship same day or worst case scenario next day.
NGOA often has the best prices I can find on Smith Revolvers and they also ship quickly and their customer service is good, too.
I'll add that I've bought several guns from buds and while their prices are good, it usually takes about a week for them to get the order, process, and ship it out while many of the other major retailers will ship in a day or two.

In terms of NIB online, I've bought 2 from Bud's, 1 from Kentucky, 3 or more from Brownells with 2 more on order. No complaints about any of them.
One day, I stumbled into a local gunsmith's shop just to say hello. In the case, he had the same new gun I was planning to buy online later that day. We got to chatting and he asked what prices I'd found online. He asked whether I had cash and my permit and then agreed to match the best deal I'd found. I took it home. Moral of the story? Sometimes you get lucky close to home.

In the past four years I have purchased from the following companies online and have not had any bad experiences:
Sportsman's Supply, Butler, Pa. 4 revolvers
Buds Gun Shop 3 revolvers (2 police trade-ins)
Academy Sports (local) 2 pistols
Palmetto State Armory 1 pistol
Ky Gun 1 carbine
Guns for America (local) 1 shotgun
Black Market Arms (Gun Broker) 1 pistol
H&M Firearms (Gun Broker) 1 revolver
I like Sportsman's Supply's no-reserve Gun Broker auctions. They don't have a huge listing like Buds, but if you like the brands they sell, they may have what you want up for auction.
I have no affiliations with these (or any other) company, just my opinions.

Not a dealer but I like the S&W Forum guns for sale section.
Found 2 that really would be hard to find and tough to beat.
Talking about used, of course.

Multiple Gunbroker purchases from multiple sellers over the years. I just search for what I want and then look for the dealer with the highest feedback rating. Those with the highest volume of sales generally have the best prices. Read the feedback, don’t just go by the ratings.

For a over a decade I have dealt with Joe Salter he’s a tad high price wise but he calls it the way he sees and rates it. No complaints in many purchases.( used guns )

There are so many out there....
One of my "tools" for finding what I want is GunWatcher.
In Stock Guns for Sale and Historical Gun Values | GUNWATCHER.COM
It's kind of an ammoseek for guns. Put what you're looking for in the search box. I typed in "S&W 640" and got 29 results. If you're still concerned about the dealer, it's easy enough to google them for complaints.

I will echo Bud's Gun Shop (on-line) is also a no-muss, no-fuss, company to deal with.
All vendors on Gun Broker that I've dealt with for new (i.e. non-used) purchases have been no problem. I've bought from vendors with a number of positive feedback.

Your biggest difficulty will be finding one. Most of the big online dealers are out of stock and there are only a few listed on Gunbroker.
