Default Picked up a 3" Model 66-2 today

It pays to find a local shop that you can stop by regularly. I was in my favorite local shop yesterday when an older gentleman came in to put some guns on consignment. He had a blue and white S&W cardboard box that immediately caught my attention; when I saw what it contained--a 3" Model 66--I decided to stick around and see what the asking price would be. The owners of the shop know me well, and know that old 'Smiths are my catnip, so they were happy not to have to work too hard to make a sale

The asking price was very reasonable (about 70% of what I've seen 3" 66's with the box and papers go for online), and the gun came home with me to join my 2 1/2" Model 66 no-dash. It also joins my recently acquired 3" Model 65-5, which I am probably going to sell, but not before I shoot them together to get a good feel for the difference between the guns. Range day is tomorrow, already looking forward to it.

Serial number is in the AHL range, any ideas on how old this gun is?

Edited to add a better picture; grips are Hogue wood boot-grips.

Very nice but why sell the 65-3? You might regret that one at some point.

I bought the 3" 65-5 because I was despairing of ever finding a 3" Model 66, which I've wanted ever since I read an article by Sheriff Jim Wilson extolling the virtues of the 3" K-frame with adjustable sights.

Very nice. Nice Hogue grips too. Had one of those but traded it to a Sheriff up in Montana or Utah or... Should've kept it. I think I paid $425 for it. Boo hoo.

If it is a 66-2, it is probably one of the Ashland distributor guns from 1985. Enjoy!

Interesting, it is marked "mod 66-2" on the frame.

That is one I am looking for and you don't see them very often. Great find, being in the right place at the right time sure is nice. I like the grips a lot ! I love the finger groove wooden grips. They just feel right to me. Got a no dash 66 SS sight and a -1 both 4" and a 2.5 inch no dash, but no 3". I was under the impression the 3 inchers were -3 and a special run made in 1988 or so.

That is one beautiful gun. You have excellent taste. I would not sell the revolver you currently own.

Wow! What a great find.

Congratulations!

I wouldn't sell my 3" 65, even if I found a 3" 66 but, that's just me.

Great score....... I've got both 3" 65s and 66s ( -3s & a -4)......lucky enough to buy them when no one wanted them. I've got some of the Hogue Boot grips..... but prefer Spegel Grips which are "thinner"

If you can; keep the 3" 65........ you will regret selling it and it will be very hard to replace.........

Now that you have a 66-2 3 incher, why not keep the 65-3 incher also. If you sell the 65, you will have the worst case of sellers remorse possible, and your backside will be continuously black and blue from kicking yourself. Ask me how I know this. If at all possible, keep them both.

Range day today:

Shot both revolvers with the same load, a mild .357 handload of a 158gr Nosler JHP over HS-6. Both guns are super smooth and track wonderfully from target to target. Made the decision to sell the 65-5, though, as I shot the 66-2 just a hair better and I've got a few other projects I need to raise funds for. I figure if I ever get a hankering for a fixed-sight K-frame 3" I can make one up from a 4" M10/64/65 without too much trouble.

Also, I had been referring to my 65 as a "65-3" earlier in this thread; it actually is a 65-5, too many dash-numbers to remember...

Why would anyone want a
Model 66 that is missing
somewhere between 1-inch
and 1.2-inches of barrel?

What are they, factory
seconds?

Don’t sell the 3” 65 unless you sell it to me. I have two 3” 65’s and two 3” 66’s and a 3” 13. For some reason I find myself shooting a 65 more than the 66. Actually I only have one 65 as my girlfriend laid claim one one first time she shot it
