Default 586 L-comp

Hey all, Am contemplating a 586 L-comp as next purchase. Did a search but all info was from 2-5 years ago. Anybody bought one lately ? I read a recent review, from Feb 2018 on Buds, and wasn't great. ( I don't believe all I read) Anybody? Thanks Ron

Just bought mine not 3 weeks ago. Lovely gun, but will more than likely have to go back for service. No problem dry-firing, but slightly sticks on 2 chambers in DA live fire. First thought the grip screw was interfering with main spring, but no. Now believe rounds in those 2 chambers sit a smidge high causing the sticking. Will let the pros sort it out. Also, strain screw needs Loc-tite. Otherwise, a magnificent gun. Little recoil with full magnum loads, even with RB grips (Due to hand injury, SB grips/frames are more comfy for me). Hope this helps. PM me if you need more.

Here’s mine. My new favorite. Good shooter, accurate, handles recoil well. Do a search for “dwever” he’s got some great reviews on the 586 L. The only negative, mentioned as well by others, the front site sucks. Too small. Go to yankee marshall’s Vids on you tube. He makes some upgrades to his 586 that I may copy. Especially the sights. I recommend it.

Mine would be one of the last guns I let go of. Amazing trigger, perfect size. My front tritium is dead though.

I lucked out and bought dwever's 586L Comp. I agree. Look up his posts. It is also one of those "last to go guns" for me.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I think most are good and the general consensus is that the front sight leaves a little to be desired. If that’s the worst thing, very easy fix. Just kinda watching them for a deal I can’t refuse. Please keep the info coming tho. Thanks

I have had mine for a number of years and I agree with the others, that is the last revolver I would ever have to give up. I have had no issues other than the silly attempt by S&W calling the front sight a "night sight" Mine got red fluorescent paint a couple of days after I brought it home. Mine was new and it came with an extra set of Hogue rubber grips which are easier to use than the small wood Altamont grips so many here love. My work as a RSO allows me to engage with a customer who comes in and challenges me to shoot with him indoors at 75' offhand. Even at my 73 years I can stay right with him by keeping the vast majority of rounds into a sheet of 9x12 paper. Next week we move to 150' which I know this gun is fully capable of doing.

To add to my above post, while cleaning the gun yesterday, I found the sideplate to be a smidge higher than the frame. The 2 rear sideplate screws were loose. I tightened the screws, and after cleaning, I dry-fired the gun, maybe 14 DA pulls...the screws had loosened again. More work for the powers-that-be.

That is sad. After producing revolvers with the exact same frame for a very long time, something like screws working loose should not happen. If it were a well used gun I would suggest some removable locktite but...
When I bring a new S&W home I usually remove the sideplate after a few hundred rounds and flush out the innards and re-lube with dri-lube. I am always amazed at the crud that comes out on a white rag and how much smoother the action suddenly became.
