Default Model 64 DAO

I have a question on the model 64. This one is DAO action “4 revolver with the shaved hammer, Old style thumb latch and firing pin on hammer. I’m confident it’s an older police trade in but I have no idea what dash it is. I’m guessing it is a -4 or -5.

I don’t care for stainless but thinking about adding one to the herd. My main concern is that I do not like S&W revolvers that have been altered. I like them the way they left the factory.

Did S&W manufacture the 64 in 4” DAO with a shaved hammer?

Yes by the thousands. Probably tens of thousands. Many were ordered by Police Departments and security firms.

Yes exactly like that. I just never understood why there was a shaved hammer on a 4”. I guess It make sense for a PD in the prevention of a negligent discharge.

They were issued for liability reasons (PD's, armored car companies, Dept. of Corrections, security companies, etc.). Many have hit the used market over the past 5-10 years. I've owned a half dozen or so and found them to have extremely good double actions. They can easily be polished up and look really good that way.

As stated above, lots of these were made with the bobbed hammers for various police departments. Many by custom order. Back 10 years or so ago, by buddies and I bought 18 of them in one shot (at something like $180/ea) from a well known online retailer that was blowing them out. Most were -5's, most had hard chromed triggers and bobbed hammers. All cleaned up very decently and turned out to be nice shooters. Thinking back, I should have bought more!

Here is (a bad picture of) mine after I eventually swapped the hammer out to regain SA mode for the range. The grips were shot so I put on these altimonts.

Enjoy your new find!

I have picked up two over the years. Both have been factory bobbed and DAO.

One was a Brinks Security trade in when they went to semi-autos and the other came back from somewhere overseas.

Both have been great guns and the Overseas one is pictured below after having been customized to a 3 inch length by Throne Firearms. It is the round butt of the set.

The Brinks one is in the 2nd photo.

Look great! BTW, if you still have that DAO hammer lying around I would buy it off you. Send me a PM if interested.
