k 32 model 16-4 Passed

Had to pass on a full lug 16 in 32 H&R last week. Gun show in Harrisburg, PA. Full lug gun very nice, with combats. $2000.00 Just couldn't pull the trigger { no pun}. If it was a 32 S&W probably would have ,but I have no use for the Magnum. Oh well maybe another show.

It will shoot 32 S&W Long. I had Hamilton Bowen ream mine to 327 Federal. Love it. IMHO worth the $2k.

I consider the 16-4 full lug 6" one of the all time greats. I have a great deal of respect for the handloaded .32 S&W Long but actually prefer the .32 H&R Mag chambering. My personal use has been confined to range use and edible small game. The .32 Mag will handle either chore perfectly and give a margine of strength over the revolvers chambered for the shorter round.

In my revolver, the .32 S&W Long shoots really well an gives me all of the performance really wanted for my purposes both now and in the past. However, having said that, I prefer the longer case. In my case, I have little need for anything more powerful than the .32 Mag in this caliber.

I bought my 16-4 when they first hit the market, so paid just a fraction of the asking price these days. Mine has never seen anything but my home cast bullets and that is all it is ever going to see while I have it.

It's a dern shame that Smith no longer supplies these. $2000 is a LOT of money for ordinary folk, that is for sure.

The price of a gun will be what the buyer and seller agree on of course, but I don't think I would even consider being the buyer of a $2000 Model 16-4. S&W could have made a bunch more than they did, and they would have probably sold steadily if not rapidly after the first flood of buyers, but they had announced a limited run and stuck with their "promise." More's the pity, since Smith reaps no financial benefit from these resales of "collectible" issues.

Why someone in S&W marketing can't see the going price of the model 16's and say "Hey! There's a real demand there! Let's consider a stainless K frame in 327!" But they have abandoned the 32 market to Ruger so here I am, a S&W fan, with two Rugers in 327 because S&W won't make one for me.

I've got a 6" 16-4 that I bought used many years ago at what was then the outrageous price of $600. I had settled for this as I couldn't afford an earlier Model 16 or K-32. Never regretted it though. Its a great shooter! I mostly shoot .32 Long in it as I never really warmed up to the magnum.
I must say it does my heart good to see that the value of one of my guns has more than doubled.

You see 16-4s on GB selling lately in the 950-1200 range. You see them listed as high $2000 (I don't see them selling at that price). There's a 4" currently listed starting at 1595.

Sorry, but Project 616 is not for sale. It is not a one-off, of course as others pretty much identical to it have been built. Oddly enough, none of them seem to be for sale either! I wonder why that is... I wonder if anyone at S&W is listening... I wonder why blue moons only come around once in a ...

I am glad I didn't pass on the one I had an opportunity to buy a couple years ago. The 32's are very accurate, and the 32 H&R cam be loaded to reasonable levels, over 1200fps with the Hornady 100 gr XTP. As you can see they are accurate!

The 16-4’s are on Gun Broker for under 1500. Just have to be patient and watch. Last Feb I bought a 4” 16-4 for 1200 to give me a 3 caliber set of 4” full lug guns. The 4” & 8” are less common. The 3 caliber set is in .38, .32 and .22. The .38 is a hard to find gun. Had Andy Horvath ream the 4” to .327 last winter. Need to do some more loads fo .327. Larry

I consider myself very fortunate that I acquired my Model 16-4 6" and my Model 631 Kit Gun as new guns back in 1989 and 1990 respectively. I sometimes kick myself for not getting a 4" Model 16-4 while they were available, and have even entertained thoughts of starting a current search or one. However, the prices they're bringing now pretty much stops me with my current two Smith .32 Magnums.

I am not familiar with this model, but do I understand correctly that it’s a full lug k-frame, very similar to the 17-6 I have but in a different caliber (.32 H+R Mag); and much more expensive due to scarcity / low production numbers ?

Classic 12 that's pretty much it. In 1989 S&W made 8800 Model 16-4s in 4,6, and 8 3/8" lengths. They are kind of hard to come by and getting more expensive every day.
