Default S&W Model 640-1 Pro Series - Fifth Times the Charm

Some may recall the saga with my 640 Pro and all the issues it has experienced...

As a review, my gun has been returned for point-of-aim/point-of-impact issues, sights falling off, damaged sights, dead tritium vials, canted barrels, missing etchings, mangled etchings, and the latest was a hammer stud which sheared off. It has been an aggravating several years to say the least.

This little revolver just returned from it’s fifth trip back to the mothership to replace a broken hammer stud. It took 65 days from the day I dropped it off at FedEx until it arrived at my door this morning.

I called several days after I shipped it to verify they received the gun. During the call Customer Service informed me, to my aggravation, that this repair would not be covered by warranty! Based on this conversation I have been quite miffed with S&W over the last couple of months.

Today the gun arrived, hammer stud repaired, and with no charges. In addition to the repair, they took my polish job to the buffing wheel and brightened it up. They also replaced both the front and rear sights with new ones.

As an aside, this gun has had a checkered past with sights. On the third trip back they installed a front sight with a dead tritium vial and on the fourth trip back they replaced it with a very dim one. Now both sights are equally bright, the white outlines are intact, and the sight finish is black again compared to the carry/worn finish before.

Overall I’m very happy with the repair. I requested supervisory involvement with this latest return and maybe he/she noted the checkered history of the gun and attempted to set things right. I think they have now finished the manufacturing process and it is finally a completed gun!

I still need to go shoot it to verify functionality, but everything looks good. Hopefully the fifth time back IS the charm (fingers crossed).

Edmo

Hi, about how many rounds did you get through before the stud broke? Were they magnums, etc? I've been interested in this model but have been holding back b/c of the POA/POI issues people have been having. I may just get another 340M&P and put a set of large CT grips on it.

I haven’t really kept track of the round count, however I would say around 400-500ish rounds with an even mix of 38s, 38 +P, and magnums. Also it has seen a lot of dry firing (with snap caps)... I would guess 1,000+ dry fires.

It only took two replacement barrels to synchronize the point of impact/aim.

I love the concept of this little revolver and have carried it quite a bit, but dang! I hope she’s good now...

This is exactly why a lot of people myself included refuse to buy a new S&W firearm of any kind! Are you listening S&W? No I know your not.

Default 640 PRO

Edmo, all I can say is WOW!!! You are my "idol". All them problems and you kept your sanity. I bought a new 640 PRO and it only had one problem, a long ratchet. I had a gunsmith fix that and perform a action job on it, and it is perfect now. I guess sometimes you can "grab a lemon. I hope you have no other problems.

That's pretty a pretty sad commentary on the quality of the current S&W revolvers. My old 640-1 that I bought in 1995 has been utterly reliable and had no issues such as a cocked or canted barrel nor point of impact problems.

Been a 640 fan for a number of years. I recently picked up another 640-1 Pro series and am so far liking the gun. Have not noticed any of the problems mentioned, but knock on wood, hope to not have those issues. Your 5 times back is amazing and a little distressing. Although a friend of mine bought a new 340 MP and the first day at the range, cylinder locked while "hurting" ourselves shooting the 357 rounds. QC? Where?
