Default Price Check on Model 25-5

Local store has a very nice Model 25-5 with a 4" barrel. Not mint, but very nice. Comes with a holster and has minimal holster wear on the tip of the barrel, otherwise the finish is almost perfect. It has the smooth target grips. No case or papers.

They are asking $1200, is that the going rate?

I'm tempted. I just don't see those often, especially in 4".

I have heard that some of the earlier .45 Colt S&Ws had oversized cylinder throats. Is this true for the 25-5 as well, or did they fix the issue by then?

Thanks for any advice on this!

$1200 for one as described seems high to me, at least where I shop. I would think somewhere under $1000. If you use the search option at the top of the page you can enter something like "25-5 oversize throats" and pull up quite a few previous posts discussing the issue. The later guns, above sn N900,000, in my very limited experience are not oversize. I have four, three with oversize throats and one not and I really can't see any difference in accuracy. Which may say more about my shooting ability than the guns. . .but oversize throats wouldn't keep me from buying the gun if the price is right. Good luck.

I was offered one the other day NIB presentation case. $1200 I'd rather get it for $1000 or less.

Jeff, I appreciate what you have said about you not seeing any accuracy difference in your 25-5's larger cylinder throat sizes. I have bought a 6" 25-5 that I suspect will have oversized throats, but this is a revolver I have desired for years and have finally scratched the itch. Mine is supposed to be mint, but I intend on shooting it. I have a 625-9 "Mountain Gun" pictured below that's a joy to shoot and is for carry in the field. I just wanted a vintage 25 with the mirror blue, TG-TH-TT, and 6" barrel, but I reckon it'll be just a range gun. I paid $1350 for my 25-5 with original boxes, tools, & papers. Should have it by the middle of next week.

S&W 25-5 in 45 Colt (coming in next week)

God bless,

I looked for quite a while for an older 25 I could afford. Came across a 25-15 at the local gun show. Box & papers, and excellent for $750 OTD. May be an option for you. Bob

I have a 25-5, 83/8" and usually don't keep S&Ws that are of
that late of manufacture. The only reason I still have it is
because it's excellent accuracy. It's one of those accidental cherries that come off assembly line. Several guys want to trade
me out of it with 6" gun, which I would rather have. I have been
offered NIBs for it but won't trade for a pig in the poke.

Went back today to take another look at this 25-5. I brought with me a Hornady XTP .452 bullet that actually measures closer to .451. It did not drop through the chambers without a slight push, so I'm assuming this revolver does not have the oversized throats.

They won't budge on the price, other than covering the tax, so I'd have to pay $1200 out the door.

Still not sure, price is high...

I'm pleased to see my 25-5 has doubled in price over the last seven years. Mine has the oversized throats, but I did not tell it and it has remained very accurate. A real favorite of mine.
Poor pic, but lost the good ones somehow.

The very few I have seen at auction recently have been in the $1200 range. Nice N Frames have really gone up the last year.
